You have to be careful with this kind of thinking. Wearing a skirt is no less consenting to sex than driving a Jag is asking to have it stolen. It doesn't matter what a person is doing or wearing, all that matters is that they were raped and that it's wrong.

Similar to the man mouthing off to strangers. It doesn't matter what he was saying, assault is assault, and that kind of crime SHOULD be taken seriously.

I actually go to college right now, and I can verify that many college women dress like sluts. They wear shirts that show the top of their boobs, very tight jeans that show the outline of their butts, and shorts that are so short that their butt literally hangs out. There are several bars close to campus, and women drink heavily and dance provocatively with guys. There is also a very heavy police presence at these bars. There are at least 20 cops in an area the size of 1 city block.

Compared to women in other countries, these women are dressed like whores. So, when foreign men see them, they think that these American women are whores. Unfortunately, many countries don't have the police presence and 911 service that America has. If these women have problems with these men, there aren't any police officers who can respond quickly.

I'm not saying that these men are justified by raping women, but women need to take some responsibility for their choices. If I went up to a gang and cussed them out, they would beat the shit out of me, and no one would be sympathetic to me. The same is true for these women. They are choosing to dress like whores, and they are choosing to make the local men aroused and provoked. They need to practice common sense. If they would dress modestly, not drink so much, and not dance provocatively, they would reduce their risk of getting raped tremendously.

It seems like you'd need statistics for comparable students from other countries studying in the US to support the premise that students are raped less often in the US because of heavy policing.

I have a really hard time with this type of thing. I completely agree people need to use common sense to avoid becoming a victim.

Lock your doors at night. Hide your valuables in unsafe neighborhoods. Don't get into a car drunk with a stranger you just met at the bar that night solely for a ride home.

When someone bad happens, you are a victim, but you did something stupid to get there.

However, I don't like the tone in the article. American women are overprotected, shame on them for being so stupid as to assume that our protection over their potential victimhood is the same right they should be awarded as people throughout the world. We've got some shit wrong but I think it's a fantastic thing that women can go out and show her calves and not be thought of as "asking for it"

So would I ever tell someone to not go out with hot pants, vinyl knee-highs and a bikini top because she might be attacked? No. Because I honestly believe her risk is just as much as if she was wearing jeans and a t shirt. She will call more attention to herself, though. But that itself doesn't make someone more likely to be raped.

I was going to read the study but it only linked to the abstract. In any case, this is how I feel about rape and clothing choice.

There will ALWAYS be a small percentage of humans (men and women) who are criminals...thieves, fraudsters, false accusers, violent people, and , yes, rapists. This is why most people don't, for example, walk around town with stacks of money in their hands or go around leaving valuables lying around. This is even more important as the potential for victimization increases (e.g. nighttime, bad part of town, around a lot of strangers, and so forth). This potential for victimization is part of being an adult human being. Adults know that human criminal predators (of both sexes) exist. Adults make decisions about how to conduct themselves. They weigh their desire for freedom and convenience against the risk factors.

If I walk around at night, drinking, with money in my hand and a couple women hit me over the head and take my money, those women are most certainly criminals. They are guilty. I am the victim. Nonetheless, my decision making process was poor. I was irresponsible to put myself in that situation while simultaneously I am a victim. Those things can co-exist, being irresponsible and being a victim. If a woman points out that I was being irresponbsible, that DOES NOT mean she is victim blaming or that she is denying that I was victimized.

So, as far as I'm concerned, women can where whatever they want, wherever they want, and under whatever circumstances they want. But, let's call it what it is--an adult makng an adult decision based on the fact that there will always be a TINY fraction of men and women inclined to rape. The average man is no more responsible for a male-on-female rape than is the average woman responsible for a female-on-male robbery.

I looked at that trad con misandrists source and nowhere did I see it mention anything to do with "sluts".

The reality there is rapists are more likely to be targeting foreigners for a number of factors, language barrier and other social vulnerabilities due to their being in a strange country.

Anyhow, I'm getting a little sick of people turning this area into a rape prevention discussion board. We are not the moral police.

Your typical cop would tell a guy to learn how to keep his mouth shut and stay away from thugs, then simply file a police report and forget about the matter. And a severe ass-kicking is no more fun than being raped. It just happens not to be a major priority for cops, because it usually happens to guys who were asking for it.

Okay, right, but here's the thing. Firstly, as danredux points out, these crimes should be taken seriously no matter what.

Secondly, rapists often purposely get their victims drunk so that it's easier to rape them, which means that if narratives that "it's the victims fault for getting drunk" become prelavent it's really fucking hard to deal with those rapists.
