Funny enough I've caught myself internally telling myself to "man up" when I felt like I was acting like a whiny wimp. I just use it to mean "get over it and stop feeling sorry for yourself."

The expression I like is "spine up". It's non-gendered and it says everything "man up" or "nut up" is trying to say.

It's telling that there is no "woman up" in the language. Apparently the culture doesn't expect women to show the strngth or whatever it expects men to, and the language reflects that.

A man is an adult male, period. If you are male and an adult then you and no one other than you gets to decide what kind of man you should strive to be.

Typically, people who tell men to "man up" are trying to shame them into doing something that they want them to do. It's nothing more than an attempt to manipulate.

To me personally, "Man Up" is just like "Grow some balls" and other similar phrases that seem to indicate that a man is not acting in a fashion that is desirable by the person who uttered it. Since these phrases seem to come mostly out of the mouths of women, there is somthing fishy about the intent of the statement. Be the man I want you to be because I want to claim that I am week.
