Yo you could not be more on the money, I was born in China, raised in Canada, but went back to visit last year. The friends I made there all tell me, to be able to get married for a young guy nowadays, they are expected to buy a house; but since the housing prices ($/unit area) are so high everywhere in China (in comparison to the average citizen's income & other costs of living; in addition, some cities such as Beijing and Shanghai have housing prices that are even higher in absolute prices than that of the typical North American house), most guys coming out of school don't come close to being able to afford one. So what do they do? The potential groom's parents buy the couple a house using their life savings, so that the young couple can continue this peculiar cycle.

This social custom isn't all that old I'm told, and has only risen to prominence within the past decade or so, no doubt coupled with the economic growth experienced by China as a whole. Only time will tell whether this trend passes like a fad or become established as a tradition, but for the time being, it is the social norm. I personally have a friend who split with his girlfriend because he was not able to afford to buy a house, so the girl's family pressured her into breaking up with him. He told me of course he was sad but he didn't feel resentment, and fully accepted it, since it is such a common phenomenon that it is completely socially acceptable, and generally the dudes all take the blame, since of course this is caused by their "incompetence".
