A while ago I was doing some research into domestic abuse and the avaliable support groups and charities linked to it in my country and I came across the page in the picture.

Today I finally got round to sending them an enquiry about it.

What I sent them:

"While looking through your website for research purposes I came across something I found rather confusing and wondered if you could give me some more information for your choice of wording and source referral.

On your website page titled "violence against men" you state that "White Ribbon Scotland focuses on male violence against women because of the massive scale of this problem and because the perpetrators of domestic violence are predominantly men and the victims women. In Scotland in 2008-9, 84% of recorded domestic abuse incidents were male violence against women."

As this includes the words "recorded" I assume the percentage is based upon police reports and figures from social services.

The page then go on to reference the Statistics Canada (2000 Report on Family Violence), directly linking to the report, and how it shows women often suffer what is seen as more serious forms of abuse.

Here is where my confusion comes in. By citing information from the Statistics Canada (2000 Report on Family Violence) you have shown you obviously feel that it is a relevant and important source of information on domestic violence.

However in the Statistics Canada (2000 Report on Family Violence) there are numerous figures which show evidence contrary to that 86% figure, and parts stating why reported cases are a bad indicator of number of victims.

page 11 - "this survey indicates that relatively equal proportions of women and men report spousal violence".

page 19 - "Overall, women were more likely than men to report using all types of social services."

page 22 - "Women made up the vast majority of victims of all forms of spousal violence reported to the police."

I would be very interested to hear why you felt the need to ignore this information showing equal victim hood from you page on male victims and instead chose to use your "violence against men" page to simply repeat information about female victims.

Information including the line "Violence against women, particularly domestic violence, has historically been hidden, ignored and left off the human rights agenda."

An interesting line with which to end a page ignoring contrary evidence from one of its own sources."

TL;DR Asking why they ignored the information about male victims in a report they cited themselves as evidence, and why their page on male victims is used to simply quote more "information" about female victims.

Here's a few more links about domestic violence in Scotland, from an older comment of mine:

60% said it was acceptable for women to hit their husbands while 35% admitted assaulting their partner. A total of 8% admitted injuring them

young men aged 16-24 experienced physical and/or psychological abuse more often than young women and more often than any other demographic group.

Alison Waugh and Jackie Walls called on the Scottish government to ensure domestic abuse campaigns addressed the needs of male victims.

She said as they tried in vain to find help for male victims, there had been a proliferation of publicly funded campaigns and services aimed at women victims and their children.

Levels of domestic violence perpetrated by men against women have risen by 30% since 2000, while instances of abuse directed at men by women have rocketed by 172%.

And how do the Scottish government respond to this?

A new domestic abuse campaign has been launched in a bid to end violence against women.

Their violence against men page shouldn't be "Yah, you couple of guys, we get it, but let's remind you that men are the evil ones here."

Yeah, this is baffling.

Why is a Scottish anti-violence organization citing a 12-year old Canadian study? It could be citing a 3-year old Canadian study, or perhaps, some sort of Scottish study.
