Yes. An extreme case would be something like École Polytechnique massacre. The killer specifically targeted women; not women who wronged him, not even women he knew, just women because they were women.

Even as an MRA, I believe misogyny is real. I believe it is a big issue, and is something that must be addressed just like misandry.

I also believe we don't see a lot of it as MRAs. The Men's Rights Movement does not go around blaming women for the problems men have. This obviously is in contrast to the feminist movement which does blame men for much, if not all, of the problems women have.

As to how common it is, that's debatable, as its hard to measure.

I think the word is used far too often for what is usually just sexism or perceived anger. Same with misandry.

It's real under its proper definition, a mirage under Gillard's definition. On the societal level it doesn't exist, certainly not in western societies. It exists in individuals like George Sodini, who was motivated primarily by a hatred of women but luckily his kind are few and far between. Misandry, on the other hand, exists not only in many individuals but also on the societal level.

There are people who hate women because they're women, yeah. I wouldn't say it's institutionalized, or taught to children universally like hating men, but it's there with a few psychos.

If I may speak entirely personally, I love women more than anything else in the world. I hope that's OK. EDIT: What I find puzzling is that it sounds so misogynistic.

In an enviroment of racism, for example, there will be lots of people who profess to hating that race, but my assumption is that while a few do, most just scapegoat that race in a merely mercenary manner. I'm sure we've all known racists who hate all x except for their friend who is x and is different - as such how much is their hate really targeted at x and not just conveniently stored in x.

Further while I think racist enviroments have existed, anti-female enviroments have never been the norm in the west.

Hatred in the form of contempt has definitely been institutionalized in societies and religions absolutely. Not in a direct "They are Evil" way, unless you count the story of Adam and Eve, and how Islam treats women.

So, yeah, although it's often tried to be disguised as the woman's fault since it's "Part of her nature" and something that can't be helped.

In modern, western society? No. In cultures that blame women for being attractive and getting raped? Absolutely. In past cultures that portray them as being unable to deny their base desires? Absolutely.

There was an article posted here today about how a dictionary is adding a second definition to "misogyny" to reflect how the word is actually used today. To me, misogyny is more often used to describe anything that characterizes women in a negative light, or anything that stereotypes women in general.

Ahhhh, but the definition has already been changed in the Macquarie Dictionary thanks to Gillards speech. It now includes, “entrenched prejudice against women.”

Of course that definition can include anything at all. Disagree with any woman and she could just say that the only reason you're disagreeing is because of an entrenched prejudice. If you disagree with the new defintion that also shows a prejudice, which is misogyny. Totalitarianism, it's exactly what you expect it to be.
