I don't think the entire sub is up for the ban hammer. We don't break any of the rules of Reddit, we just have an unpopular point of view.

Besides, r/MensRights has always been used as a springboard for people to get involved in other organizations. Fathers & Families, COTWA, A Voice For Men... If people want to start a new site, I highly encourage it. But I wouldn't do it out of fear of /r/MR being banned.

Just my two cents: I personally wouldn't follow the MRA crowd to an external site. I like reddit and it would be fair to say it's where I spend the majority of my interneting time. I also don't like the "us vs. them" mentality behind the idea of breaking off into a MRA-exclusive site. My goal is total gender equality, and the insular nature of a standalone site will, in my opinion, lead to more extremist groupthink. I've seen it occur already here, and believe that it is tempered most effectively by the fact that any reddit user can stumble into this sub and offer their viewpoint.

I'm also confused why there is concern of /r/MensRights getting banned. I'm aware of the creepshots fiasco, but to fear that this will snowball into MRA seems misguided to me. I'm much more worried about r/WTF and other such subs.

Well, if we want to go the easy route, avfm has a forum. I could talk to the staff there to see if they will set up a /r/mensrights subsection with /r/mr mods as local moderators to that subsection only.

On the topic of a website, I am a good linux administrator so if we need someone to run the server(s) and keep them up, I'm the man for the job.

I can only really code in c/c++ and php; So unless our website's backend uses that I won't be much help there.

I would prefer to remain part of a larger community website, if r/MR was banned I would quit Reddit altogether and actively campaign in real life against the website to have it shut down...

I would rather watch all of reddit burn than SRS feminazis take control. If r/MR was banned that would indicate to me that SRS has taken over.

This is a good idea and i have been thinking about it a lot. My programming skills are decent, so i can help out

However, if we are doing a new site, we need it to be significantly better than reddit. We need to seriously think about what features makes reddit such a gigantic circlejerk in the default subs and move away from it.

Some ideas for thought:

Make downvoting non-existent / harder
it's ok to promote own links
be able to upvote thing multiple times ( but you only have a limited number of double upvotes ).
allow for non-antonymous posting for brave people

I don't like this idea. I found MR by using reddit. I like being here and I like the community. I don't think we will get banned, but staying here for as long as possible is important. Staying here exposes others to our issues.

There are fucking tons of MRA sites out there. This one needs to continue its existence for the simple fact that occasionally a post here will end up on the front page of reddit and attract new users. A separate site turns this reddit into an echo-chamber and relegates us to obscurity. Don't let trolls force you from your home.

Is this fear related to the Gawker band and Vilent Acres thing? I know I've nto been here for long but it doesn't seem like there has been anything posted here that would give anyone cause to shut it down, IMO.

Since there are already MR forums and sites out there, why not run a "Digg" or "Reddit" like site where people can submit articles and news regarding men's issues/rights.

It will offer flexibility and control over what you want to do and is more scalable if it actually took off

I understand that SRS made a claim that /MR is next but we don't break the rules. There's really no reason to think /MR is going anywhere. I found /MR because of Reddit not because I was looking for Men's Right's forums.

I think a lot of people wouldn't get exposure to /MR issues without this sub. Even the trolls who cause drama help drive people here that might not have ever specifically sought out a men's rights group.

What about taking it a different direction and making an IRC chat or something that's more of a compliment to /MR and a backup plan if we need a regroup point in the future?

I think it's unpopular to be associated with men's rights. To the uninitiated the idea of men's rights seems... well... antithetical to feminism which is frankly very popular nationwide and even more so on reddit.

The term "men's rights" is inflammatory, even if most people agree with the ideas promoted here. The reason for that is with all the feminist thinking out there, the term "men's rights" causes a knee-jerk reaction which shuts down the reasoning centers of the observer's brains, because at first glance most people think we are anti-feminist, that we promote male superiority, when in fact we do nothing of the sort.

People in today's society are conditioned to reject and denounce things that appear racist or sexist. People hear the term "men's rights" and they automatically assume misogyny - no further investigation required.

This is the challenge that we face to have true equality in society - we (men) can't defend ourselves against the injustices which are so obviously present to us (but to which most of the rest of society is blind or feels is justified) without people - even most other men - automatically assuming we are male chauvinist pigs as soon as the term "men's rights" flows from our lips. Part of that is the radical sensitivity to feminism that this culture has been indoctrinated with, and part of that is our own fault too, in that we have not clearly communicated that we support women's rights just as much as men's rights. We are simply seeking true equality.

Frankly, women have had it a lot harder than men throughout most of history. While I completely agree that it's the war of the sexes is turning around, that women are starting to come out ahead in many cases, it's also not hard for me to see why people who don't truly understand men's rights have come to hate the term "men's rights." In fact there's been lots of "rights" movements sprouting up from the oppressed segments of the population. Black person's rights, gay rights, women's rights, worker's rights, student's rights, etc, etc, ad nauseum. In almost every case, these movements have been from oppressed demographic groups that have legitimate claims of mistreatment, hate violence, and discrimination. It is also the most common portrayal and perception that white men are the ones behind all of these injustices, and let's be honest. Historically, that has been true, and in in fact may still be true today. By and large, men are still in charge of the world, even if their share of power has reduced significantly in recent decades.

I think that is why the term "men's rights" seems so patently ridiculous to most people. We need to redefine our message so that we don't appear to be claiming to be an oppressed segment of society. Sure, there are injustices that befall us simply because we are men. I don't disagree with that at all. Just imagine how ridiculous the term "men's rights" sounds to members of those demographic groups which have suffered far more gravely than we ever have simply because of their race, sexual orientation, religion or impairment.

I think that redefining the message starts with changing the name. May be not "men's rights." Something that more clearly states our goal of "truly equal rights."

TL;DR We need a new name that more clearly identifies our purpose.

AVfM is a great site and I've resumed working to develop Backlash.com, but I agree with those who feel that it is important to continue to use and support the MensRights reddit.

My only idea is to only make two rules. Rule #1: no advocating, promoting or instigating of violence. Rule #2: no misquoting people (it pisses me off and serves no purpose other than that)
