I find this very interesting, but I need to see the actual evidence. I also see

I had more people come to my defense when I had a different opinion

and wonder if it has anything to do with men not feeling like defending women's arguments, which would seem rather counter to the stereotype in my view, or more because they felt out of place taking over in the comments—not that that isn't an issue in itself, but not necessarily anti-female.

Regardless I'd be very interested even in the comments from this or other case studies.

It's interesting, but it needs to go from anecdotes to something that can be quantified.

What the OP describes - same submission, one lingers at 0, one catapults to 400+ - if you think sexism is the most plausible explanation for that you haven't been around reddit very long.

Very odd - I generally take all comments as gender-neutral; it doesn't usually occur to me to even consider if the poster is male or female (I'll notice via the content being gender-related)...maybe because usernames can't be trusted generally anyway; someone might come on as Rachel555 but is actually a guy who's a big Blade Runner fan. I now feel deflated that this approach might not be as common as I thought.

However, could there be an element of that kind of thing at play here? People attacking because they think the female-usernamed poster is really a guy?

I liked the /MR mention in the comments there, about how people with obviously female names shouldn't come here. I've definitely noticed a lot of hate for people with 'girl' in their username, for sure. If someone fitting that description posted a series of videos, I bet they'd get no upvotes at all, regardless of how awesome they were! /s

Just seems like someone who set out to "prove" her own biases. She was biased to begin with, she ran the "experiment" in a biased way, interpreted the results in a biased way and then presented them to support her initial assumptions.

It's the usual princess feminism which says men have it easy and women have it hard even while the exact opposite is happening. Why wouldn't she say which usernames she used in her "test" so others can look at her methodology? Of course it's not serious but then that's the point.

I Posted a pretty long response to this a few minutes ago then realized I was speaking on behalf of a community that I mostly lurk in, so I hope I didn't misrepresent you guys. I just spent the last few hours watching some of the various front page videos and found myself feeling it pretty hard especially girlwriteswhat's stuff, kind of ironic that she says shit I've felt instinctively for years to be true but didn't know how/couldn't express. Here's the post in full:

Well the subreddit is there to support men and it gets trolled a lot so it's not really surprising, some of the guys there have been through a lot and what seems lighthearted to you may touch a sore spot with one of them. I'd like to ask you though if you think that it's ethical to go into someone else's space under false pretenses. I'll give you an example, let's say I came to 2xc and posting under a feminine name, made some light hearted comments about "us girls." do you think that that's an honest thing of me to do? I don't. I'm not sure you knew what the implications of what you were doing were so I'm going to assume that you did not intend to lie, or to cause harm, but I think you ought to examine your actions on this. Men's rights is a space that exists to support men, everyone is welcome, but just like 2xc you ought to respect it for what it is and who it is intended for. If you go into a male space don't expect people to start bowing and taking off their hats for you. Men question, we are aggressive, and territorial if we weren't, then well we just wouldn't be us.... And that would suck because some of us are quite awesome, and if you find that climate to harsh for delicate sensibilities (and I mean that most light heartedly) it is your choice to not be there. Isn't it wonderful to have that choice! You are empowered and totally entitled to remove yourself from places that are disagreeable to you. That said, I hope you come back, you seem rather bright; a lot of the MRAs are bright too. If you find it a bit hard to relate to I suggest you check out girlwriteswhat's videos she's an MRA (imagine that!) that has a real knack for expressing passionate issues in a thoughtful logical way I think she has one posted on the front page right now. Who know's you may watch one of her vids and find that you are suddenly a men's rights activist too.

TLDR: treatise questioning the expectation of polite treatment among the barbarians, the ethics of masquerade, and touching on the virtues of the unfairer sex and her fair defenders

Edit: didn't really address the issue of upvotes on duplicate posts but I've noticed that's pretty common on reddit as a whole (the plague of reposts) I'm not sure that indicates sexism as much as the hivemind's uptake delay in quality content but that's just my best guess explanation.

That thread in twoX pisses me off. Someone has anecdotal evidence that female commenters are treated differently than male commenters which is likely coloured by confirmation bias, and then basically all of twoX circlejerks about how much feminism is needed and how hard women have it. They also take the opportunity to berate male redditors for not knowing how to interact with women, and we also get some white knights criticizing MRAs. I really need to remember to stay far away from twoX.

The thing that kills me about twoX is that they are just as hostile to men, as the rest of reddit is towards women. Any time I go into twoX and say "as a man" or "as an MRA" there is always atleast two people making nasty remarks towards me no matter how polite I am.

If reddit was populated by a majority of women, I'm sure it would be as shitty to men as it's considered to be towards women.
