My parents got divorced when I was around 7/8 years old. I was living in Virginia, and then I moved to Florida and have lived here ever since. My dad had moved down about a year later so he could be closer to me and my sister.

I knew my parents fought, but they did all the court stuff without my knowing, mainly while I was in school. My parents had planned it out, so it wasn't one of the whole childhood abduction situations people had to deal with.

My dad was always on time with his child support, and while my mom appreciated the money (and actually needed it for a while) there was never a cutthroat apocalyptic battle on who got what. I even got to decide who I lived with.

This is just to show you, that while divorce sucks, it always isn't that horrible. Just saying this to give my experience. :) Still, that person commenting is a total jerk, and it's a serious problem that she's thinking like that.

Funny thing was is that my Dad is a Family Law lawyer. Irony lol.

Don't want to sound sexist but this is the norm in this country. I've talked to women living off of CS with no job. It's pitiful. Makes me angry how some can con the system. Then you have widows who bust their ass to support their kids with no help. System is screwed

I don't think much of the friend, but unless child support is ridiculously exorbitant I'm in favor of it. If you have children you are responsible for their well-being. This should apply equally to both men and women. Men often draw the short straw when it comes to child support, so yeah, it can be a men's rights issue, but I'd object just as strongly to a woman getting screwed by excessive child support claims.

I don't think people on MR think about child support in the right way.

It is a payment not only for the costs of having a child, but also for the time spent parenting. If it takes ~3 additional hours a day say on average to look after a child, the non custodial parent is paying for the "free" time they have in that they have to shoulder less of this.

Following from this, support should only be granted, in equal custody situations, when there is a huge income disparity between parents, such that one parent may not be able to afford the material costs of the child.
