Love the part how the author thinks that objectifying men is okay due to the "power differential" but men cannot check out women without it being creepy and sexist. Hypocrisy at its finest.

On top of that, they tout the non-sequitur that 'appreciating beauty = reducing to an object'.

Check out some of the comments too. Plenty of creep shaming by darling princesses who are bothered by being inconvenienced to say 'no' now and again.

As a woman who does have a problem with catcalling and harassment and the entitlement that some men feel to any cute girl's time (by which I mean the ones who get upset when you don't respond or turn them down, not just anyone who approaches), looking is not even on my list of things to bothered by. Do we still have some problems with the idea that women's bodies are public decorations? Yeah. But those problems start when people actually start interacting. Merely looking at someone is never, has never been, and should never be a seriously considered problem. It's not even rude, in my opinion (unless you're licking your lips or rubbing your crotch or something else to be particularly lewd).

We're human beings. We have sex drives and we like pretty things. Straight men check out women, straight women check out men, gay people check out their gender, and bisexuals check out everybody. What boggles my mind are the people who don't seem to understand that you can objectify someone from afar, or in a sexual setting--but still treat them like a human being in any real interaction. And it's not some magical power that I have just because I happen to be a girl who likes girls instead of a guy with a male gaze. Most guys I know are just as good at turning the sexualization on and off.

The only bad thing in the original article that she was responding to is the idea that women "ask" for attention with what they wear. A lot of the time, especially if someone has a good body, it's just an unavoidable side effect. If I wear a tank top on a hot day, I'm aware that my rack is on display, and it's okay to notice that--it's just a bit offensive to be told that was my goal, and insinuate it's impossible to be sexually attractive without trying. That just leads to body shame issues and actively trying to hide, which is something I'm still struggling to get over after five years of intense clothing-and-body-related slut shaming from an ex of mine.

i see it as it is okay for a man to check out a woman, as a woman can check out a man, as long as there are no rude comments from either side it is not hurting anyone, it is not a crime to look but once you start harassing that's when the line is drawn.

People in general have no control of seeing someone and realizing they are attractive. What people do have control over is staring and harassing. To me, it is a politeness issue, not a gendered issue.
