Not sure I agree with this. In the military, enlistees give up a lot of freedoms that civilian employees don't. In return, the military has a duty of care to its personnel.

Why should she use a home test or go to another doctor if she had reason to believe the doctor(s) who treated her? If the doctor(s) provided failed to do their task adequately, she may have a case.

I'd let the lawyers and judges decide on this one.

Uh.... the doctors - people responsible for detecting pregnancy in pregnant women - failed to detect a pregnancy for several months despite pregnancy symptoms. I actually do think she has a leg to stand on.

Are you serious? Perhaps you should read my post again to gather a sense about the kinds of risks that are expanding to submarine crews and submarine missions. This is never a case of "one woman," it is about an elevation of risk by significant degrees, in an area that has never been tested (re fetal neutron/gamma exposure in close proximity to nuclear reactors), all for what purpose? Women serving their country in every way possible are admirable and are regularly commended for the excellence they bring to the various activities. But on nuclear submarines? Perhaps you have data to reduce the concern every women serving within nuclear radiation fields should have before going aboard. This is a post more FOR women than against them, and a post that expresses concern about their (inevitable) pregnancies and the health of the babies they hope to deliver.....

Another case of a woman abusing the system.

Why couldnt she pay $5 and get one of those disposable pregnancy kits?

She is the one that had sex, she is the one that the responsibility falls on.

This is the problem with women, they want equality with men, but they dont want to have to take any responsibility - like a child that does something stupid and then looks to the parent to get them out of trouble.

And now that the US Navy is putting women on submarines, just think of the interesting consequences. Being a savvy woman, she took birth control protections during her romantic night before deployment. The protection failed (as they are occasionally known to do). Being savvy, she "spent $5" and tested herself. The positive pregnancy test was noted 3 weeks out into the 2-month patrol, plus she started having early symptoms of a miscarriage, a bleeding kind of a thing. She told the sub's hospital corpsman about it all, he stressed about doing a pelvic exam (which he doesn't do regularly), he worried about her anemia that threatened her life and the fetus life, he wondered how he could do a maternal ultrasound since the only submarine ultrasound equipment was sonar (and there was no ultrasound tech or radiologist to perform and interpret the test), and he asked to see her dosimeter to calculate exactly how much neutron and gamma radiation the ultra-sensitive fetus had received. He decided to talk with the captain, the only choice for everybody was to hotfoot it out of sensitive waters (Russian, Iranian, Syrian, take your pick), the mission of the sub was discarded as it made its way to aircraft carrier rich waters for a helicopter pickup. And, 8 1/2 months later, when the baby was born with any of a vast array of potential birth defects, and when the baby was found to have autism or another vast array of developmental defects, WHO'S SHE GOING TO SUE? Perhaps the U.S. Secretary of the Navy for the crass dereliction of duty for having put women on subs in the first place, to achieve "gender neutrality." Perhaps a basic course for the U.S. Navy leadership is needed to allow the understanding that women are, in many ways, REALLY different from men....
