Ok, first of all I want to establish that I have nothing against men, women, or any victims of a sexual assault. I'm a crisis counselor at a local shelter, sensitive to diversity and strive to end oppression where ever I find it. That being said, I want to investigate a challenging issue. Many males I go to school with have expressed fear of being accused of sexual assault/rape as a weapon of revenge from old girlfriends, dates or spurned lovers. I want to know what the reality is for those who are falsely accused of committing the crime of rape and if the law is still biased towards the male perspective or if the system is now leaning too far towards women. I hear people complain all the time about women getting the kids in a divorce proceeding because society doesn't think a man can raise children, or about men who were convicted of statutory rape for having consensual sex with a girlfriend a year younger than they. I want to be able to give a solid answer to the current trending in law. Is there still bias towards men, and we aren't doing enough to protect women? Or, have we gone too far in trying to protect women and made men subject to similar fears and damage women have endured in the past? I think it would be really interesting to see what sort of data I could come up with. So, reddit, give me feed back! Is this a good idea? Constructive criticism is welcome!
