What truly escapes me is why state welfare authorities don't just ask Hoose who the father is, do DNA testing on him and, if she's right this time, demand payment. What's the problem with getting the right man and letting the wrong one go? What state interest is served by soaking a man who's not the father and letting the man who is go free?

One of the points of child support is that he who fathers a child should be financially responsible for it. In Harper's case, the State of Michigan has it exactly backwards.

No. The point of child support is to assist the State in reducing the expenses for orphans and poor, unwed mothers. That's why they don't give a blip who gets the bill, just as long as it isn't them.

I can only imagine what would happen if there was an immaculate conception. They'd probably hit God up for an astronomical amount of child support, then shut down the local Catholic churches for supporting a 'deadbeat dad'.

Its news like this that makes me sad for how a lot of state laws and sometimes even federal laws will not protect men when it comes to children. It seems to me that if a man wants to see his child, it really depends on his relationship to the mother, because the courts will screw the man nearly every time. I've seen it in my own life and that of my sister. And its a damn shame. In regards to his situation, i really hope that his lawyer is good, because he doesnt deserve this because the state of Michigan is lazy and cheap.

Ummm, I don't see why there's a problem with forcing the woman to divulge who the real father is. I mean short of rape, she should probably know who she willingly slept with.

Worse, if the child isn't the "fathers" then forcing him to suffer an economic loss, is fraud.

Some years ago, JAMA found that 20% of their genetic testing resulted in finding the father was not the biological father! Since early 2000, that number has jumped to 30% in the States. Over the past 6 years, I started to research and try to understand that phenomenon. I have gathered many testimonies from men over the world that have been through such an ordeal of finding out one or more of their children were not from them. They are frustrated, sad and angry. They feel “raped” and violated to no end; and the court adds to the insult by forcing them to pay the bill.

Infuriatingly awful.

So any ideas on how to start fixing this crap? It makes a great case for simply turning off the welfare faucet outright.

If I remember correctly this man was given a chance to pay for a paternity test and clear his name. He didn't do it because he was broke and the default judgment was against him. Not that it's right, but he did have a chance to clear his name.
