The issue isn't one of overt blaming, as in "it is your fault you were raped". Victim blaming is meant to describe such arguments as, "Well, why were you walking down that dark ally in a short skirt?"

That is what is meant as victim blaming, and I have seen it happen.

At the same time - why was that person walking down the dark ally in a short skirt?

Erin Pizzey said it best - many of the women who were in her shelters had a serious history of abusive partners. It wasn't isolated cases, but a systematic return to abusive relationships. They aren't at fault for that abuse, but we need to seriously reconsider whether "men are evil" is the right view of it, or rather "some people are abusive, and others have a psychosis that continually finds them in relationships with abusers."

Yeah.

But very rarely, and it's an attitude seriously looked down on. From personal experience, victim-blaming is about as popular as being a neo-Nazi.

I blame people for getting themselves intoxicated and doing stupid things under intoxication. Sometimes they're male, sometimes female. Sometimes it's driving drunk, sometimes it's sex.

Rape is never acceptable, but someone who incapacitates themselves is not blameless.

i have heard it quite a few times.

it seriously gets dumb on top of "well she was wearing THAT at a frat boy party, what was she expecting?"... like "well she shouldn't have been out alone late at night" Why is it okay for the streets not to be safe, rather than her not to be on them...hooray rape culture

Actually, alot of blaming the victim i've heard comes from women. Mostly it comes from uneducated or closed-minded people. But there are alot of those out there....
