Happy to see this statistic show up in my work's Mental Health Training. I just wish the Mental Health Training wasn't optional.

systemic inequalities that women often face in accessing the health services they need

I really want to hear more about those.

They’re just repeating what they’ve been told, like parrots. I doubt they’d be able to provide evidence to substantiate such claim. They’ll just repeat more mantras. I don’t doubt women have a hard time accessing some gender-specific procedures/services, but that does not equal to men having an easier time accessing general health services. In fact, everything seems to point to things being the other way around. If that premise were true, then women would be the first group to have reduced access to health services that still outlives those who allegedly have more access to it.

As someone who went through drug and alcohol related services in england i was amazed at how much easier it was for women to get help than men, i went to detox and rehab but it took me much much longer to get there than it did for the women (who were a majority in both situations)

I don't know much about Scotland, but I think there's abortion restrictions and thats pretty much it from a western systematic health perspective.

I don't think there are problems getting an abortion in Scotland.

I'm a supporter of the SNP in general, but I would have liked to see a plan to address the health concerns of men as well, like male mental health support being abysmal because services treating depression and anxiety are aimed at female presentations and treatments, which discourages men from getting or sticking with help.

We need programmes that help men with mental health in a more accessible way, such as outdoor activities and also a recognition that some men are unlikely to seek help if a service doesn't seem aimed at them. Suicide rates in men are sky high compared to the women's rate. We need to recognise and address that.

The Scottish Government has already identified alcohol and tobacco abuse as a significant issue - see https://www.gov.scot/publications/scotlands-public-health-priorities/pages/7/ - and while that particular page doesn't identify by gender, this document - https://www.gov.scot/publications/scottish-health-survey-2016-summary-key-findings/ - identifies that "Male drinkers were twice as likely to drink above the recommended maximum of 14 units a week than female drinkers" and that they were likely to drink more when they drank to excess. So while it's by no means not an issue for women, the prevailing culture makes it an issue that affects a lot of men - and I suspect men are less likely to ask for help.

Unsurprisingly the only area where they are trying to "help" is one where helping means publicizing a negative portrayal of men and masculinity. No thank you.

They're trying to appeal too much in a way that split the voter base in England and gabe rise to the shitpile that is the tories. I wish they had a more balanced approach.

Once we get independence I hope there will be a party that more suits my views. I currently vote SNP/Green for constituency and List vote but I don't entirely like either of them, I just want independence so we don't have to deal with Westminster's rules any more.

[–]xsplizzle 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

do Scottish people who want independence think they will magically get into the eu or something?

[–]skellious[S] 5 points6 points7 points 4 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

There is no reason Scotland should not be admitted. it would be via the normal process to join, but Scotland already meets all the criteria to do so, and was a member for over 50 years, so most of its rules and laws are already harmonised with the EU.

It would take a few years, sure, but we'd get associate membership pretty quickly and full membership not too long after.

You dont think spain would veto it?

[–]skellious[S] 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It's obviously possible but I dont think that it would provided independence was achieved in a way the UK gov didn't disagree with (I.E. via an authorised poll like in the first vote). Spain is concerned about the EU recognising an entity that left its parent entity without authorisation of the parent entity. this would be different as Westminster would have authorised it.

I think we should just kick Spain out, if they can't honour people's self-determination.
