The video seems a bit daunting - it's a video essay of almost 2 hours, and the style makes one think "wannabe prominent Breadtuber/left-wing Youtuber", which when talking about men, often means very tired and reductive takes about the so-called toxicity of a large contingent of the male population.

But it's actually one of the better videos I've seen on the subject. The guy goes into his own personal experience (starting out as an awkward guy who was terrible with women, who dabbled in PUA, had a string of casual hook-ups with a lot of regrets, and then found some happiness and a stable relationship), and talks at length about what makes PUA stuff so appealing to shy/awkward guys who struggle with dating and sex, in a way that is not demonizing and shaming.

Sure, he makes a few obligatory potshots at the pick up artists/dating gurus themselves. But the people he criticizes aren't exactly known for being your run-of-the-mill dating coaches. There's certainly some sleazy fuckers among them. Some of the guys, like Neil Strauss, actually renounced that lifestyle (in fact, what people forget is that the book The Game was intended as an insider insight into that community and its dysfunction... not as a manual or as an example to follow!) But, he does acknowledge that for a while, it seemed that this weird-ass PUA/seduction community was the only one that was willing to even make an attempt at actually giving guys actionable, concrete advice on how to go out there in the world, approach and meet women, actively practice their social skills etc. He validates certain things like:

  • dating for straight guys is hard in a way that is specific to men: guys have to be proactive. This is complicated by the fact that it is less and less the case that there is a commonly understood courtship etiquette that people are able to fall back on, which means that everyone is just flailing about like a bunch of idiots, nobody knows what they want anymore, nobody knows how to communicate or navigate boundaries or interest, and people are flaky as shit. Sometimes it feels like you need to be a mindreader to navigate this shit.

  • Most guys, even those desperate enough to seek out PUA advice, don't initially set out to hurt women's feelings, trick women, deceive women to use them for sex, etc. Most guys who struggle would love to be competent enough with dating and women to eventually find a compatible match to form an intimate long-term relationship with. Sex is part of it, but most guys also want affection, intimacy, etc. They want to treat women with decency, they don't want to make women uncomfortable, they care a lot about not creeping out women. They don't feel "entitled to sex and romance" - they just have a strong desire to experience those things, like most people who aren't asexual or aromantic do.

  • "be yourself" and "be confident" are meaningless platitudes, and those who need this type of advice the most are actually the least well equipped to understand what it truly means without amassing some experience (positive and negative) first.

  • "progressives" love to shit all over PUA stuff and other communities that give advice to men that is primarily aimed at helping men and not primarily aimed at enforcing political correctness. And while PUA stuff does contain a lot of BS and charlatanism to a point where it becomes counterproductive when not taken with whole lakes of salt, most progressives are actually completely silent when it comes to coming up with an alternative to PUA. They either revert to aforementioned platitudes or they just shrug and say something that basically amounts to "don't care, it's not a systemic issue, life sucks sometimes, man up" etc.

  • Because the people who claim to care deeply about people forming ethical, healthy relationships actually don't bother to come up with a workable alternative (since they seem incapable of speaking to the average man in a way that average man finds relatable, or take the average man's problems seriously), other than to shit over both traditional dating, and more novel approaches like PUA, this leaves space for extremely flawed things like PUA to grow to a level of popularity where its flaws become a real problem.

  • Meanwhile, the void left by progressives is not only exploited by people who care about nothing else but getting laid, or wannabe life coaches and gurus who smell a profitable market, but also by outright right-wing ideologues who have stumbled upon a veritable goldmine of people who feel frustrated, alienated, and low on self-esteem, ideal brainwashing fodder.

I found it refreshing because other people who talk about "male dating" in a way that includes practical advice, but also explicitly points out the flaws in PUA-style stuff, tend to be people like Dr. Nerdlove, who also take great pains in performatively dunking on toxic males... while such guys, most of the time, started out as PUAs themselves. Kinda seems like overcompensating, which is why I found this video to be a fresh breath of air. But your mileage may vary.

To be clear, it's not that PUA doesn't contain a lot of manipulative BS that doesn't lead to true connection. Overall, PUA is pretty crappy. The point is more that there are attractive aspects to this stuff that fulfills and speaks to certain male needs, and that it's a bloody shame that of all things, it's these weirdos who seem to be the only prominent people in the mainstream to have made an attempt at providing workable answers. But we could be inspired by the (few) good and attractive aspects of PUA to provide a healthier framework that still offers a workable action plan in a language that guys actually speak and understand, while getting rid of the unhelpful manipulative stuff.
