I may not be particularly well brushed up on my feminist theory, but from what I can remember, 'the male gaze' is a theory that suggests we look at the world through a man's eyes – particularly in our view of women.
It's essentially a female obsessed perspective, that sexualises and centres women.
And I was thinking – isn't gynocentrism just a desexualised version of this?
And how would 'the male gaze' look, elsewhere?
The male gaze of abuse, for example, is one that centres the conversation on physical violence, rather than financial or emotional abuse, or parental alienation.
Similarly, our efforts to reduce bullying in school are focused on the the head-in-toilet, black eye kind, rather than understanding the consequences of gossip and relational aggression.
I've seen people try and move the conversation of police brutality toward Black women too, despite Black women being literally less than 1% of victims, compared to Black men.
Whilst the examples of men being written out of sexual violence legislation, speaks for itself.
The point is, I genuinely find myself in agreement with the idea of 'the male gaze'. Because what the 'male' is looking at, is a woman, which is literally a gynocentric point of view.
And I do think the original male gaze theory was true, the world did (and still does) sexualise and obsess over women – but we must also apply this theory elsewhere, onto our perspectives on violence and sexual abuse, and more widely onto how we define victimhood and perpetration.
So has anyone else ever considered the parallels between the male gaze and gynocentrism?
