How do you see your own 'male identity'? To me, I'm a man because I have a penis. I'm a heterosexual man because my desire goes out to women. And I'm a man's advocate because I see and experience what troubles it gives to be a man in this society, and I think showing solidarity is the thing to do then. That's largely it. I acknowledge, on average men and women have different qualities and interests; but mine are too mixed up to make any male identity out of it. Also, I've never been too wild about being part of any group, except for socializing reasons, and even that can become too restrictive to my taste. So what about you?

How did my fellow LWMA's end up here? Did you ever buy into the mainstream feminist narrative? If so, how did you find your way out of it?

I've always been a history nerd, so I never fully bought into the "women have been oppressed and subjugated " thing because( in the U.S. at least) that's just not historically accurate. What really did it in was my my formal history education. I was extremely lucky to get some fantastic professors. In my U.S. History, Discovery - 1865 course, I had a female professor and it seemed like the entire point of her course was disproving the myth of women being oppressed victims, and empowering women with historically accurate, strong, empowered women to look to as role models. Was a fantastic course.

She highlights examples dating as far back as the early 1800's of women successfully manipulating state and local legislatures into prosecuting men, and even a few hermaphrodites for doing things or not dressing to the standards they liked.
