Home run. Here is the thing, it's easier to mislead people about cultures they know little about to begin with or vultures they are already mislead on, then it is cultures that they are more familiar with.

Since the dawn of civilization (and probably even earlier), by far the most common and universal claim used by one culture to portray their neighbors as barbaric or uncivilized, has always been to claim they mistreat women. Whether it be Greeks and Romans talking about Persians, or the barbarians, or vice versa, Muslims and Christian talking about each other, English talking about the Vikings, Egyptians talking about their neighbors, Europeans talking about Native Americans, Israelites talking about Canaanites or Philistines, Babylonians talking about steppe nomads, Mongols vs Chinese, capitalists vs communists, or even post-enlightenment Europeans talking about their own ancestors in the middle ages. The oldest story known in the world, the Epic of Gilgamesh, begins with the description of a tyrant king who mistreats women. The Iliad is based on two peoples engaged in a 10 year war in order to defend the honor of a single woman, who each side considers the other to have mistreated.

Human beings are the same everywhere. There is no culture in the world where men don't value the well being of their mothers, sisters, wives, daughters, aunts, etc. Accusations of mistreatment of women is the oldest and most affective smear tactic in history.

The idea that people in Arab or Muslim countries don't value or care less about the well being of women is one of the biggest lies and most successful pieces of propaganda in Western or Christian countries.

Algeria has a crazy male-on-female sexual harassment problem, for real.

Not the metoo bullshit, but following a woman in the street for miles, pestering her. I spent a lot of time working in the tourist industry and people who had been to Algeria had so many horror stories, and I have spoken IRL with Algerian men and women who confirm it.

I'm sure we can all speculate on why a conservative religious country where the sexes are rigidly separated from puberty onwards might have such issues, but I am inclined to believe that it's true based on so much independent testimony from people who don't know each other or have any obvious axe to grind against Algeria.
