Because , at least in the low-end public schools I attended, resources are poured into them, while nothing is done for boys at all outside of sports.

School is essentially sitting around in a low-energy environment doing repetitive busybody work while conforming your views to that of an immediate authority figure. Obedience and conformity creates success while rebellion and independence leads to failure. So yeah.

Nice article where they actually talked about helping boys achieve in school.

Thinking of what they said about how grades are based in part on how well students blend into the way school is organized, I can't help but be reminded of how John Taylor Gatto wrote that based on his research and personal experience as a teacher, school as we know it was designed to churn out obedient workers who are good at following instructions.

Girls follow directions, while boys fuck around.

This isn't rocket science. Anyone who has worked with girls know they follow directions to the letter, while some boys think they can just do whatever they want and it will all work out in the end.

I've taught high school for 15 years and yes, I've had boys who were absolutely FUCKING brilliant! Amazing kids, easy to connect with, understood pop culture references and were easily able to draw connections from the past to today (my focus is History). I've had plenty more girls among that group. I imagine it is just that they are subconsciously trained to follow directions and act accordingly.

It's not the system. It's about personal responsibility. If boys want to do better, they need to put in the time and effort.

Edit: I should point out a few things.

Like I said before, I have had good students and poor students from both sexes. I tend to find if girls are struggling, they are more likely to reach out and ask questions than among boys who struggle. I am not sure why this is, but it could be a factor. Maybe it's some innate thing about males that we struggle in asking for help.
