FWIW this is a moderator on r/socialsim

[–]Flaktrack 5 points6 points7 points 6 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I got banned from socialism for defending /leftypol/, who were quite obviously not nazis lol... but that's a big problem with the left right now, preferring deplatforming to freedom of speech and association.

[–]insane_gravy[S] 1 point2 points3 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

As in a 4Chan board or the sub r/leftypol?

Sweet jesus fuck what the hell is wrong with the moderators?

I swear these idiots are just wealthy edgelords who drive $50,000 cars, don't actually care about Marxist ideas, and would get their asses handed to them by a real leftie. Alternatively, for the conspiracy minded, it's a long con by T_D to discredit the left.

[–]ur_waifus_prolapse 4 points5 points6 points 6 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

High neuroticism, Extremely Online, and 100% of what brings meaning to their lives is proving they're leftier than thou.

Personally I think it's funny that their ideology is so broken, that even trying to implement it in online spaces for fun produces the same totalitarian dysfunction as it has in real life.

[–]Aaod 4 points5 points6 points 6 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Who knew the position of unpaid internet janitor mostly attracts people who want to abuse their power or create an echo chamber where only their opinion exists.

You, like, described 90% of western post-soviet left.

I’m not sure any men have been sent to jail unjustly because of the Duluth Model, but on a somewhat unrelated note, Ellen Pence, co-founder of the Duluth Model, has written herself that’s its shit:

"By determining that the need or desire for power was the motivating force behind battering, we created a conceptual framework that, in fact, did not fit the lived experience of many of the men and women we were working with. The DAIP staff [...] remained undaunted by the difference in our theory and the actual experiences of those we were working with [...] It was the cases themselves that created the chink in each of our theoretical suits of armor. Speaking for myself, I found that many of the men I interviewed did not seem to articulate a desire for power over their partner. Although I relentlessly took every opportunity to point out to men in the groups that they were so motivated and merely in denial, the fact that few men ever articulated such a desire went unnoticed by me and many of my coworkers. Eventually, we realized that we were finding what we had already predetermined to find."

https://archive.org/details/coordinatingcomm00mela/page/29

The Duluth Model remains one of the best examples of the discrepancies between feminist theory and reality.

E: Clarification.

I don’t think any men have been sent to jail unjustly because of the Duluth Model

? Like in any way? Or do you mean solely because of the Duluth model?

I'd argue that the Duluth model was the theoretical expression of the relations which entail men who were abused going to jail. So if you are saying that it isn't the root of the issue that's fine, but if you're saying it hasn't played a role in the arrest of men who were abused that's retarded.

[–]b_d_boatmaster_69 2 points3 points4 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Solely because of it. It’s doubtlessly reinforced the narrative that men are power-hungry abusers and women are helpless victims when that simply isn’t the case. I’m not even sure men haven’t been jailed solely because of it, however. That’s just ignorance on my part and I’m open to any evidence that comes my way.

[–]ABitterSatireHeWrote 1 point2 points3 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Ah gotcha

[–]InitiatePenguin 4 points5 points6 points 6 years ago* (8 children) | Copy Link

Well arrest ≠ incarceration.

Socialist Mod is correct in that they advocated for re-education and not punitive sentencing.

It is likely to contribute to the assumption that the man is inherrantly the abuser but police are filled with biases about who isn't and is a threat. Which is why arrest versus incarcination is a really big distinction here. And even Duluth did not want incarceration, unless their crimes warrented it (edit: and they did advocate for harsher sentences for repeat offenders). And then reeducation as part of reintegration.

[–]oldguy_1981 8 points9 points10 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

An arrest still stays on your record, even if you were never convicted and or the records were expunged. It still comes up on any background check when you apply for a lease, open a bank account, apply for a job, etc.

Sure

Downvoted for agreeing. Not surprised.

The problem with that is it's not what the model wound up doing, and the mod defending it is taking a "rules as written" approach to defend something which anyone who had empathy would be disgusted by.

I've got plenty of other screenshots of this mod more or less defending other indefensible shit too.

[–]InitiatePenguin -5 points-4 points-3 points 6 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Do have any information that directly links the duluth model with unwarrented incarceration of men? I've always seen it as more of a bias ("who's the aggressor", "men can't be victims") issue. For them to go to prison, they still have to be found guilty. Which means they also have to be convicted by a jury.

I'd agree that there's probably a lot more overnights spent in jail by men who were immediately arrested on the assumption they were the perpetrator but that was neither Duluth's sole doing nor is it the same as incarceration.

I've got plenty of other screenshots of this mod more or less defending other indefensible shit too.

No. Unless you're intent is for this to be a drama-making hit piece on another sub rather than engaging with the actual merits of a men's issue.

Oh, sweet summer child. 60-80% of the US prison jail population are pre-trial/unconvicted.

[–]InitiatePenguin 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago* (2 children) | Copy Link

You linked to info about jails. Not prison. Your hyperlink is misleading. This has more to do with the bail system than incarceration.

It even says: "In the eight states where convicted people make up the majority of the jail population, that status is less likely to be the result of particularly enlightened bail policies, and more likely to be the result of the jails in that state renting large numbers of cells to the state prison system."

Saying this isn't a total picture of who is behind bars. In the full report it says:

"One out of every three people behind bars is being held in a local jail, yet jails get almost none of the attention that prisons do."

Further making the distinction.

Of course there's a lot of pre-trial and unconvicted in jails. More than I would certainly agree should be there and I already admitted Duluth may play a role in those arrests.

Which is why I specifically asked about incarceration and Duluth's involvement in the Prison system.

[–]lookafist 3 points4 points5 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Prison or jail, it's still incarceration. You said

Do have any information that directly links the duluth model with unwarrented incarceration of men?

And I provided exactly that information. Are you claiming that pre-trial detention doesn't count as incarceration if the sign says "jail"?

A man wrongly arrested under the DM is very likely to spend some time incarcerated. Typically every arrest will result in incarceration, even if brief. How'd you like to spend a night in Rykers Island?

[–]InitiatePenguin -2 points-1 points0 points 6 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

And now you're just quoting even less of what I said. After saying they would have to be convicted you linked me stats about pre-convictions in jails.

Are you claiming that pre-trial detention doesn't count as incarceration if the sign says "jail"?

No, I'm asking how does the Duluth Model relate to men being sent to prison. And you gave me some stats about jails.

A man wrongly arrested under the DM is very likely to spend some time incarcerated.

And I already said as much. But Police officers also have always had their biases. DM calls for re-eduction, not punitive sentencing. (Which requires conviction, and ultimately a prison).

How'd you like to spend a night in Rykers Island?

Nobody does.

Feminist organizations have "educated" law enforcement and influenced public policies in a way that has contributed to this.

Some of this is documented here, among other places:

Kelly, Linda. (2003). Disabusing the definition of domestic abuse: How women batter men and the role of the feminist state. Florida State University Law Review. 30, 791. Available from: http://redpilluk.co.uk/How%20Women%20Batter%20Men%20and%20the%20Role%20of%20the%20Role%20of%20the%20Feminist%20State.pdf

It's not just something that gets claimed by MRAs. It is fully supported by the facts and history here. If people want to apologise for this today then that's fine, so long as they don't try to downplay or conver up the history that's associated with it.

A brief glance at the above source associates the Duluth model with rehabilitation moreso than it does aggressive arrest tactics, but page 824 (titled "Arrest") starts off very strong in blaming "women's advocacy groups" and beliefs in patriarchal power structures for the problem (ie feminist inspired beliefs, which also underlie the Duluth model).

[–]b_d_boatmaster_69 2 points3 points4 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Thank you for this source. I have previously tried to find something like this to no avail since I suck at researching and am lazy.

I’m not sure if it came across well but in my original post I wasn’t claiming for certain that no men had been jailed due to the Duluth Model, but rather that I was uncertain if any had.

[–]Oncefa2left-wing male advocate 3 points4 points5 points 6 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

The Duluth model might technically not have much to do with it. But it exists inside the wider theory of men oppressing women that has led to these problems, and is kind of like the poster child of this problem.

Men are always seen as abusers and women are always seen as victims. Hence why men get arrested and women don't.

[+]InitiatePenguin -6 points-5 points-4 points 6 years ago* (7 children) | Copy Link

I'm glad to see this subs opinion move over time on the relevancy of the Duluth Model.

[–]serpentineeyelash 8 points9 points10 points 6 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

The Duluth model and the broader ideological agenda behind it remains relevant.

Just last week, the Council of Europe told the Netherlands to make its domestic violence policies more gendered! There are undeniably still very powerful feminist groups pushing for policies treating women as victims and men as perpetrators.

[–]InitiatePenguin 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I'm not familiar with the organizations or the countries here. What's the affiliation with Duluth? They don't have a monopoly on shitty gendered practices.

[–]serpentineeyelash 1 point2 points3 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The point is about the ideology, not about Duluth specifically.

[–]Flaktrack 5 points6 points7 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

No matter how hard you try to pretend the older themes of feminism have somehow vanished, it just won't be true.

[–]InitiatePenguin 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

I've never said they've vanished.

[–]LacklustreFriend 2 points3 points4 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Ellen Pence said Duluth was shit (which it is), not that it isn't used.

[–]ABitterSatireHeWrote 1 point2 points3 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I might literally have never seen so much idealism in one post.

material relations and state policies to reproduce them and the ideologies associated with it are irrelevant because look over here at the least putrid parts of some descendant ideology.

Nevermind, "idealism" is too generous. At least idealism makes some sort of logical connection.

[–]lookafist 14 points15 points16 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

It's also manifestly untrue. The Duluth Model assumes men to be the primary aggressor in every DV situation, and requires "mandatory arrest" and "increasingly harsh" jail sentences for primary aggressors.

https://www.theduluthmodel.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/The-Duluth-Model.pdf

[–]InitiatePenguin 1 point2 points3 points 6 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

and "increasingly harsh" jail sentences for primary aggressors.

It actually reads: "Jail sentences in which offenders receive increasingly harsh penalties for repeated acts of aggression"

Immediately following an "evidence based trial".

You're right that the original model wanted compulsory arrest for "primary aggressors".
