Reason #4,000 not to use OLD: A recent Bumble bug put women at risk. Any creep with a modicum of tech know-how could pinpoint a woman's exact location. It's fixed now, but you cannot trust these sites to have your best interests at heart!

This is so cute 🥰 He put in so much effort into his proposal and he's so emotive. 🤵‍♂️👰‍♂️ If a man isn't THIS excited to get married, I don't want him! 🙅 | From "last day as a boyfriend" by AJ Rafael

People really underestimate the value of observational learning. I see misogyny everywhere. Women getting the short end of the stick in relationships. This is the only sub I've seen that doesn't shy away from that reality. So I wanted to show it some love!💛💙

The last time I tried OLD, I tried Bumble. A man flirted with me for a few days and then asked me out. And by out, I mean he asked me to drive two hours to meet him at a park for a walk.

So, I blocked him. And then deleted the app. And learned my lesson.

I think women should maximize their privacy by signing up for the minimum number of websites/apps possible. A big site or app gets hacked, or "leaks" user data, almost every single month. The men running these things don't care, they're all either too small or too big for anybody to launch a class action lawsuit.

Bumble is the absolute WORST.

The breaking point that got me to delete bumble was one guy I matched with trying to pinpoint my location based on how many miles away the app said we were at any given time. He was a software engineer with an interest in security. Knowing that he could’ve possibly been able to do something like this is terrifying.

Also a $2000 bounty for discovering this kind of major vulnerability feels incredibly low.

I'm not a software engineer and I figured out it's possible to do this even before reading OP's article. You don't need extensive IT knowledge for this. All you need is a willingness to spend a lot of time into "guessing" an OLD user's location to become a stalker. This is why using OLD can be dangerous as pretty much everyone can become a stalker as long as they are committed to doing so.

Even before reading your article, I figured out it's possible to locate a person's location with OLD's GPS function. The technique I thought of was walking in a random location and seeing if the distance increased and then walking in the opposite direction. You will then probably reach a point where you will be closest to the person. You will then walk at a right angle to the line you walk and then see if the distance between you and the person increased or decreased. If it increases, you walk in the opposite direction and you will then probably reach the other person's location. This method is not as quick as triangulation and less feasible as it's not always possible to walk in a straight line due to obstacles but it'll still probably work.

This is one of the reasons why I am uncomfortable with OLD. It's pretty much exposing my location and it's hard to avoid this for certain apps. In some ways older OLD sites such as OkCupid are safer in the sense that they don't have this GPS function.

It's really sad how creeps come up with these methods to stalk women. They are clever, but instead of using their intelligence to make the world a better place, they're harming other people. I must say the person who came up with the triangulation method is very intelligent. What a pity he used his intelligence to harass women instead of innovating new technology to help others.
