TM is a catchall phrase.

Look it up on Wikipedia. The entry there has four or five definitions of it.

When people use it unironically, they are typically doing it to shut men up from talking about an issue.

"OH that issue? That's due to toxic masculinity. We get rid of that and the issue is fixed."

Yeah? We get rid of toxic masculinity and men will stop killing themselves from family courts stripping them of their children? From a society that doesn't give a damn about them? From suicide hotlines that are reluctant to treat men seriously? From dv hotlines that refer them to abusers programs? Riiiggghhhttt...

[–]silent_thunder1618[S] 16 points17 points18 points 4 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

yeah indeed, it's outrageous, and the personal attacks when they don't have an argument it's so textbook.

I will look it up, it's no surprise there isn't a solid definition of the term, they always complain about how language it's violent while creating and modifying these terms in order to attack others

[–]armaadi 8 points9 points10 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

It's vague on purpose. If it was specific, then a solution could be proposed and once implemented, we can measure if the fix worked.

But if it's vague...then the problem can persist indefinitely. Then they can keep blaming problems in society on TM and always be the people fighting for justice and equality. No feminist will give up their struggle. If they did, then they would be actually responsible for stuff.

[–]silent_thunder1618[S] 10 points11 points12 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

this is a really enlightening explanation!! thank you!!

and it makes total sense why this is part of their arsenal. I think it was Karen Straughan who said feminism was losing its purpose of existence then they started to demonize men to cause conflict and conflict it's always profitable ( I'm paraphrasing)

[–]j0k3ricu 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Not talking to anyone is not masculinity nor toxic masculinity. It's just a mislead behaviour. Men always opened up to male friends or mentors from time immemorial.

Feminist forcefully associate bad behaviour to masculinity, while blurring the line.

For instance: Biologically Male species are more driven to have sex with multiple females of the species. They amalgamate the urge to have sex with urge to force women for sex and we end up with the term rape culture. The final inference always needs to be " men are evil "

[–]MementoMori2004 3 points4 points5 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yea anytime I try to bring up a men's issue, "it's because of the patriarchy and toxic masculinity", so im supposed to suddenly be happy because ur fighting for my ability to cry?

Don't forget how you can't even be upset at the number of women who flake on you and laugh at you when you try to talk to them or ask them out because that will get you labelled a nice guy or an incel, don't forget how men get shamed for mgtow, getting treated like a second class citizen when you want male role models and men only spaces.

It was never about equality was it?

[–]silent_thunder1618[S] 23 points24 points25 points 4 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

so this meme was the main topic and the comments were really nasty against men and toxic masculinity been the cause of men suicide, I post a comment there (I shouldn't have done it, there was no point) but this was the interaction and I think it proves the point but I'm not so sure anymore a little guidance would be appreciated

[–]ZombieHorde15 16 points17 points18 points 4 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

You were in the right I think. This is why I always keep my head down but you did good by having the courage to stand up for it.

[–]silent_thunder1618[S] 7 points8 points9 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

thanks, man really appreciated, but this just leaves me with a really bad feeling

[–]ZombieHorde15 5 points6 points7 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Douchebags on the internet do that, just know at the end of the day an argument with a complete stranger on the internet isn't a huge deal

[–]silent_thunder1618[S] 3 points4 points5 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

yeah I know, I don't feel bad about the discussion but about the thought that in the end there was no point, and it feels so unfair.

[–]Kindly-Town 6 points7 points8 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Toxic masculinity is not the cause. They ask men to cry which actually puts men in even worse situation than they were already in.

[–]JiiSik 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It’s a gaslighting tactic from them. They treat men who show their emotions like garbage anyway or use his lows against him

[–]newyorkloser45 17 points18 points19 points 4 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link

You know he's full of it when he begins his counter-argument by calling you a dumbass.

[–]silent_thunder1618[S] 6 points7 points8 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

yeah that was really BS

[–]manicraccoon 13 points14 points15 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Toxic masculinity is BS. Just a way to victim blame men while pretending to show concern. Men have almost zero avenues of support when it comes to DV, rape, or sexual assault. Most therapists don't know how to handle issues men face. No one notices a man barely holding it under pressure. They only notice it when either the man breaks down or goes on a rampage. Then made into another example of "toxic masculinity". Men are people too. Just because they don't express their feelings in the "right way" doesn't mean it is toxic.

[–]Mercy9989 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I hate that they had to pit masculinity after the word toxic, toxic masculinity doesn't exist, you're either a positive person or a toxic person, why did masculinity had to be brought in it.

[–]Reddit1984Censorship 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

The problem is term ''toxic masculinity'' itself because it does imply taht masculinity is toxic.
What the term should be is ''toxic gender standars'' or ''toxic stadnars for men'', if feminist just changed the wording fo the term this whole problem would be solved, but yet THEY DONT because their intention is to blame masculinity for everything.

[–]silent_thunder1618[S] 2 points3 points4 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I think the term per se doesn't have a solid definition, every place have a different approach so in the end, it becomes so vague that it is used to point any kind of behavior men have, for example, I have been reading some articles about how to deal with depression in men and the terminology diminish men's feeling and the causes of such feelings and they root the problem with TM without even considering environmental causes, trauma, abuse anything in conclusion men's depression it's caused by their own toxic masculinity so WTF

[–]reddut_gang 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

toxic masculinity is just another bs way they victim blame

[–]someone_somewhere345 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

just think of it this way, women attempt more suicides but it's committed more by men because men actually believe in commitment and hard work. probably a stupid joke but hope it somehow helps

[–]frednoname1 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

We just are more successful.

[–]Kindly-Town 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Mathematically, it's not possible that X can have less suicide rate than Y but attempted rate is more than Y because suicide rate is always less than attempted rate.

[–]Snoo-76699 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Op u are partially correct and on other hand the other person is horribly wrong . Next time check there other comments to know there perspective about something u are confident enough to defend it's quite good to know if other people is correct or not .this is because people now a days use words in a manner that sounds good but is not or just read about logical fallacy, and words or sentence for used to twist the meaning of the sentence .

[–]silent_thunder1618[S] 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

yeah I would keep that into consideration cause my reaction was fuel by the lack of positive comments on a topic that it's really sensitive for me, lesson learned.

would you mind elaborating on where I went wrong? I would like to improve my criteria on the matter, thanks

[+]symmetryofzero -12 points-11 points-10 points 4 years ago (21 children) | Copy Link

Hey man. I have come to apologise, the insults weren't necessary and were uncalled for.

My points about toxic masculinity still stand.

So, I am sorry for coming in hot. That is on me.

[–]Input_output_error 20 points21 points22 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Yea, no. As other here have pointed out, tOxIC mAsCuLiNiTy is a bullshit concept. It blames men for things that are done to them.

Things like blaming men for not being able to talk about their emotions, it aren't men who weaponize these emotions. In all my life i have never had a man tell me that my emotions weren't valid but women sure as hell have.

[+]symmetryofzero -7 points-6 points-5 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

You seem to be inferring that I think men are to blame here. I've never said that or implied that. Toxic masculinity (in my opinion) is when men are told they can't have feelings or be vulnerable. Not specifically by other men, but by society as a whole.

What you are talking about is exactly toxic masculinity. What you have been through, is toxic masculinity. These women have put you down or ignored your feelings, because "that's not what men do" or whatever bullshit reason they came up with. That's toxic masculinity.

Nobody wins with toxic masculinity.

[–]Input_output_error 10 points11 points12 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

No, im not inferring that you think men are to blame, im saying that toxic masculinity as a concept is entirely flawed and not a thing. 'Toxic masculinity' is something feminist have thought up in order to beat men down.

What i am talking about isn't 'toxic masculinity' in any way, shape or form. Men not being able to show their emotions is because of the severe backlash they get for doing so. And again, it aren't 'other men' who shame them into not sharing their emotions. By calling it 'toxic masculinity' feminism blames the men for their lack of sharing while men are the last group that can actually 'solve' this problem. The only thing that is toxic about this is how women react to men sharing their feelings, not the fact that men have learned that they can't.

Nobody wins with toxic masculinity.

Hard disagree, it is feminism that 'wins'. They coined a sexist term that you are using, by using this term unironically you are validating their crazy religion.

[–]Doyle_Trekka 7 points8 points9 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

You mean toxic womananitity?

[–]symmetryofzero -4 points-3 points-2 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Is the word you're looking for femininity? Either way, no I don't mean that.

[–]someone_somewhere345 5 points6 points7 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

masculinity is NOT toxic. it's good. misusing those traits and putting pressure on men while attempting to bring them down (feminism and society, NOT men) is what u THINK it is. its simply negative pressure by feminists and society, nothing to do with masculinity

[–]DistrictAccurate 5 points6 points7 points 4 years ago* (2 children) | Copy Link

"Harmful stereotypes" that restrict the actions of men whilst depriving them of help and value for being born with the wrong chromosomes are called misandry. Differentiating between those who are "real men" and those who are not is misandry. Enforcing conformity is misandry. We used misogyny like that for ages. No new terms needed.

It's not that we do not consider these restrictions to be problematic. Even less so that they would be desirable. The terminology, however, is inconsitent with existing language and unneccesarily ambiguous. In fact, the usage of the term itself as well as the relative severity it implies next to misogyny is in itself perpetuating the idea of men's issues as second class issues at best. One that does not need to be addressed and as such makes those who ask for it whiny babies - which is a connotation that needs to be avoided. Ironically, those who use the term are also those who believe that all men who speak about issues in a societal sense are loser incel misogynists for doing so - makes you think about how much they actually care. And don't get me started on fragile masculinity - primarily used to threaten the masculinity of those who fear the punishment that follows if they don't conform. "Can't imagine being so tough that X would threaten me". Not only is this the equivalent to "those who make fun of people with X have X themselves" - which is everything but helpful, it is also ignorant to the experiences of aggression and punishment associated with non-conformity in men that result in that fear and the conformity that follows it.

Using the term perpetuates the issue it allegedly calls out... And does so whilst there already were suitable terms for all aspects of it.

[–]silent_thunder1618[S] 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Thank you your argument is really on point.

[–]symmetryofzero -1 points0 points1 point 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I dunno, you're still describing toxic masculinity to me.

No one thinks men's issues are second class. The problem arises with whataboutmen attitudes. Whenever women's issues are mentioned, that's when supposed MRAs chime in with "well what about men?!!1one!". Women do their own thing, make their own marches for women's rights/issues and that's great. That's NOT the time for MRAs to demand "well where's the men's match?!". You're right, where is the men's march? Why haven't you men organised one for yourselves? Is that something women have to do for you?

Acknowledging the privilege of being male does not cancel out all the disadvantages and problems faced by men only. I think a lot of men get upset over the term "male privilege" because they think the person means nothing bad ever happens to men etc. Which is obviously not true.

Anyway, I kinda went on a tangent there. My main point is, the term toxic masculinity is not saying men are bad. It's saying, the negative parts society (men and women) think men should be, is toxic.

[–]Reddit1984Censorship 2 points3 points4 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Why use a term that implies ''masculinity is toxic'' this is the problem we have with the term.
I dont care what your ''definition'' is because you could have used another term that didnt leave room for missinterpretation, yet you (feminist) dont.
Why not call it instead ''toxic gender standars'' or ''toxic standars for men''.
If you only did that then everybody would agree and no discussions would be had in the subject.
Feminsit could very easily reword the term to avoid conflict YET THEY DONT proving that the intention behind the specific wordinf of the term is to blame men and masculinity for everything.

[–]symmetryofzero -1 points0 points1 point 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

my man.

"toxic masculinity" is purely referring to the TOXIC aspects of masculinity. When men are told to be a certain way to be manly, that is detrimental to their health/well being or to others around them. Case in point, men can't have feelings etc. That's toxic. It's not specifically men's fault society is that way. Naming it as toxic masculinity is a way to recognise and change.

[–]Reddit1984Censorship 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

That my problem with it, that ''toxicity'' is not a property of ''masculine'' as you are saying you are exactly why i dont like the term it makes people like you beleive that this ''toxicity'' is rooted in ''masculinity''.

All you need to do is change the term to something like ''toxic standars for men'', thats it, isnt that so much better with no posible interpretation of masculinity as the toxic thing?

The term Toxic Masculinity is purposely using those words with the goal of blaming it all on masculity but, my man, let me inform you that feminity as as much to do with those toxic standars for men as maculinity has and as much women have pushed these toxic standars on men as men have.

[–]reddut_gang 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

anybody using the term "toxic masculinity" is just victim blaming. But that's to be expected considering the core ideology of feminism. To blame men for literally everything bad and that anything a woman does that is bad is men's fault.

[–]symmetryofzero 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

Can you throw some examples my way of when men are unfairly blamed for bad things?

lol that is fucking stupid, I agree. I hope those boys are okay and got through such a trying time.

But that's not blaming them.

It's like when a friend someone dies and you day "I'm sorry for your loss"... You're not sorry because you killed the person, you're sorry that your friend is going through some shit.

[–]reddut_gang 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It's an apology, not condolences. Plus, nobody forces people to send condolences. The only forced "sorry" is an apology. A forced admission of guilt.

[+]cuccurucucu-paloma -12 points-11 points-10 points 4 years ago (12 children) | Copy Link

Maybe you had a point but you used "females" instead of "women", it would be fine if you hadn't used "men" instead of "male". And also you made a generalization, if you want to say "not all men" when shitty people say "all men are trash" or "all men are rapists" then you can't go and post "females are ruining men", you are doing the same thing.

Also "toxic masculinity" is a thing and is perpetuated by women too. The problem, in my opinion, is that while the concept is right it should be called in another way because it is often misused. See it as "harmful stereotypical male behaviors", for example, when a woman expect the man to be the one to always pay or to "get over it" and not cry about something or to be always ready for sex, ecc... she is renforcing toxic masculinity.

[–]silent_thunder1618[S] 4 points5 points6 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

oh ok I will use the proper terms, sorry English isn't my mother language didn't have a clear context of the words

[–]Reddit1984Censorship 5 points6 points7 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The fact that the term is not changed proves on itself that the intention of the term is to blame men for everything.

[–]DistrictAccurate 3 points4 points5 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

"Harmful stereotypes" that restrict the actions of men whilst depriving them of help and value for being born with the wrong chromosomes are called misandry. [–]Thraap 8 points9 points10 points 4 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

‘Harmful stereotypical male behaviours’ seems an equally problematic name for it.

[–]cuccurucucu-paloma -1 points0 points1 point 4 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Why do you think so?

[–]Reddit1984Censorship 7 points8 points9 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Because it still puts the blame on the male behaviour only.

[–]Thraap 8 points9 points10 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

It still implies that these behaviours are something inherent to men and that men freely choose to display them. When really men are forced to display these behaviours in order to survive and function in our society.

Rather than put the blame where it belongs, on the expectations society has of men, it puts the blame on men themselves.

The rest of your comment I definitely agree with.

[–]cuccurucucu-paloma 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I agree with you, that's why i use stereotypical, because these are cultural and societal expectations, they are not inherent but they are definitely acquired depending on the environment you grow up in.

[–]Kindly-Town 7 points8 points9 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Maybe don't use such an ambiguous term whose definition is not self descriptive and invented by incel women in gender studies.

[–]cuccurucucu-paloma 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It wasn't invented by incel women in gender studies but it was definitely brought up and misused by a lot of them.

[–]someone_somewhere345 5 points6 points7 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

toxic masculinity is NOT a thing. harmful and negative pressure is what it is. MASCULINITY IS NOT TOXIC. NOTHING of it is. we SURVIVED all these long thanks to it. it should be enforced for males to protect them and help them cope and survive against feminism and this society. male, female, men, women... same thing. females shouldn't be trying to think they know ANYTHING about what men want or need. the problem now is that feminists are ridding young boys off masculinity and father figures, two crucial things for young boys

[–]SharedRegime -1 points0 points1 point 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

When a woman expects those thinfs yoh liated shes not reinforcing toxic masculinity, shes reinforcing toxic femininity.

This basically blames men for things women do which takes accountability away from women entirely.

Your wrong. "Men feeling like they can't talk about their feelings is toxic masculinity" is correct. That person did not imply men are to blame like you said. Society in general is to blame. That person was 100% with their comments.

No, it isn't. 'Toxic Masculinity' is a bullshit tern meant to victim-blame men and not offer up a proper solution to what they're suffering from. If society is to blame, why hasn't there been any change in the root causes of making men feel this way?

Really? Have you asked others what they think about it? Most men I have come across hate it. It is a toxic term used to denigrate main and a catch all term to dismiss male mental health and not have to deal with it

You say that but then say 'Toxic Masculinity' is not a victim-blaming term. Be consistent. 'Toxic Masculinity' is a sexist term

[+]WarAgainstLiers -8 points-7 points-6 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

No its not and I don't care what others think of the term. New age feminists use it incorrectly to call all men toxic. Toxic masculinity is just as detrimental to women and society as it is to men.

[–]Jakeybaby125 6 points7 points8 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

So you're saying that society is to blame for mens mental health and you want that to change but then say you don't care what others think? Be consistent. Do you or do you not care about mens mental health?

[–]WarAgainstLiers -3 points-2 points-1 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

So you're saying that society is to blame for mens mental health and you want that to change

THATS THE POINT OF THIS FYCJING SUB, HOLY FUCJING SHIT

you don't care what others think

THATS FUCJING RIGHT, I DONT CARE WHAT OTHERS INNCORRECTLY THINK A DEFINITION OF A WORD IS

Do you or do you not care about mens mental health?

PLEASE FUCJUNG KILL ME YOU ANNOYING FUCJING ASSHOLE

[–]Kindly-Town 7 points8 points9 points 4 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

You are blaming society then what does it have to do with masculinity?

[–]WarAgainstLiers 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Nothing? Its toxic masculinity, not masculinity.

[–]Kindly-Town 6 points7 points8 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

This isn't self descriptive which clearly means it was made to fit the agenda.

[–]WarAgainstLiers 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Who do you think came up with the word? No fucking shit sherlock

[–]Reddit1984Censorship 2 points3 points4 points 4 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

[–]WarAgainstLiers 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Because the term was coined by a man who was one of the first to study male abuse in prisons, with his 3 areas of study being why

1) would rape & beat other prisoners especially when they never did that kind of thing prior to prison 2) why men who were victims and witnesses wouldn't report 3) why these men victims of sexual assault didn't seek treatment either for physical or mental damage

Its a term describing the particular male psychology.

Feminsit could very easily reword the term to avoid conflict YET THEY DONT proving that the intention behind the specific wordinf of the term is to blame men and masculinity for everything.

New Age Feminists use the term to say all men are evil or whatever. Feminists did not create the word or coin it.

This is such a tiring complaint this sub seems to have.

[–]Reddit1984Censorship 2 points3 points4 points 4 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

The gender of the perosn coining the term is irrelervant feminsit are the ones using it and spreading it feminist from both genders.
It woudl be so easy SO EASY to refer to this concept using other words and boom there you go problem sovled yet they dont tahts the problem.
Just.Use.Another.Term. that doesnt imply in any way shape or form that males or masculinity ar toxic and the only ones to blame for the phenomena.
Just change the word and everybody agrees with them, why dont they do it?
Because the intention is to blame men for everything thats the only explanation.

[–]WarAgainstLiers 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Yes and yes but no. Its an academic term and you just need to call people stupid when they misuse the term.

[–]Reddit1984Censorship 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

No, they need to change the term that is obivusly not workign for its purpose.
Specially because its ''academic'' theres nothing academic about a useless obtuse term that doesnt work.
Whya re they getting payed so mucha s academic if they cant even fix something so easy? Isnt that the whole point of their job?
They could just change the term and the purpose of it will dramaticaly increase its effect i guarantee you you will multiply by 10 the acceptance of the term by just changing and is literally their job to do their academic definitions properly.

[–]WarAgainstLiers 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

They could. Theres so many words I wish I could also reword

[–]WarAgainstLiers 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Using the term incorrectly yes. Look up the history and academic use of the term, not the new age feminism use of it.

Men always discuss their problems with their friends and mentor. If he opens up the female around him and for sure the feminist will gas light the victim like hell.

Feminist can't defining what is masculinity, for men.

[–]WarAgainstLiers -1 points0 points1 point 4 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

I personally would never discuss my emotional problems with anyone. I don't think most men have anyone they talk to like that till they get married.

[–]j0k3ricu 3 points4 points5 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Well your inability to find a reliable friend or mentor or godfather doesn't define masculinity.

Sobbing about your feelings to their wife might be good idea, until her boyfriend wipes their tears.
