I’m about to get married at the age of 18 because it will increase my federal aid for college. So for me it’s worth it. Hell no to kids tho.
[–]NoMarriageNoKids 15 points16 points17 points 4 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link
You know the saying. "Marriage is grand. But, divorce is a hundred grand."
Federal aid is the dumbest reason to get married I think I've ever heard. That's right up there with marrying a foreigner for $10k just to give her a green card.
Just do yourself a favor and smack yourself in the head now.

No. I still date and have fun with women. I just avoid the pitfalls of legal entanglement. The sub is focused on sharing the pitfalls of legal entanglement with the government. We don't tolerate hate, misogyny, misandry, or any other type of general bashing. It's a very peaceful and "matter-of-fact" educational sub and those that come in to stir up trouble are quickly dealt with.

Personally, I would give a woman gifts if she was in a relationship with me and I wouldn't want anything in return. If she's a sweet girl I think she deserves it. Is this just me or does anyone else feel this way?
[–]cassu6 35 points36 points37 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
I mean yeah obviously. Hell I give my friends gifts and expect nothing in return
[+]Jonesw16 -6 points-5 points-4 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I'd even turn down her gifts in return and tell her not to, do you do this with your friends? I do it with mine.
[–]cassu6 2 points3 points4 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Yes! Although that maybe more because I don’t really like receiving gifts
[–]RikerT_USS_Lolipop 12 points13 points14 points 4 years ago (12 children) | Copy Link
Yea. That's fine. What isn't fine is being in a one-way relationship. So you might give your girlfriend a gift without expecting something explicitly in return but you should expect her to return your level of effort and sacrifice. Not doing so would indicate a lack of self-respect.
[–]Jonesw16 -4 points-3 points-2 points 4 years ago (11 children) | Copy Link
Damn straight, that hits the nail on the head, though I wouldn't want her to give me anything and I'd turn down all her attempts at giving anything back to me. The idea of a girlfriend buying me gifts would make me feel small and emasculated personally. I don't want or need anything from her except her respect.
In fact, I don't even need a girlfriend lol
[–]AssertiveDude 3 points4 points5 points 4 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link
How does her giving you gifts make you feel small? Have you considered how she might feel if she’s constantly getting things but not allowed to gift you anything?
[–]Jonesw16 -1 points0 points1 point 4 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link
It feels wrong and I don't feel it's her job to do so. I've heard numerous stories about women dumping their boyfriends after they cried at funerals so I could never afford to play any feminine roles whatsoever. Whether that's crying infront of her, letting her buy me gifts, opening up about feeling sad to her, her paying for my meals (few examples). I could never do any of that.
Because I think if I were to be accepting of her gifts, it would make her lose respect for me by taking on the feminine role and she'd probably leave or start treating me differently. Women can lose attraction to you over the pettiest things, which is why you've got to never show weakness or submission.
[–]NZGuy2019 3 points4 points5 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
It’s great and you need to do what works for you and what you think is right. To be contrary or devils advocate, If she assaults u in a domestic argument first but complains to police that you assaulted her? If she stays at home and you work and she doesn’t contribute (ie not looking after kids etc) is that fair? Where is your weakness or emasculation then ? I know we’re talking about a gift, but I’m making a jump to equality. I see where you are coming from though, but these guys are saying why is it not a two way street in this post, why do I have to contribute but you don’t? Why isn’t it equal? Regardless of gender or sex. Interested to hear your thoughts,
[–]Jonesw16 -1 points0 points1 point 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
If she assaults me, it's over full stop and I'd never EVER hit her first. *Maybe* even in self-defence, although I'd REALLY want to if she hit me first. The only thing that might hold me back from retaliation is that she has the power to ruin my life in that situation. As for the police, I don't know what I'd do since there will be no way to prove I didn't hit her and she'd ruin me by her false words. I've had a false accusation ruin me before when I was 12, I was lucky the police said I didn't seem like the type of boy to say I'd rape someone in my class.
That's why if I were to pick a partner, I would pick the sweet 'good girl' over the 'bad bitch party girl' type that everyone seems to lust over and this situation you described is another reason I'd go for that type, so it could prevent that from even happening. If my partner is one of the 'good girl' types, I believe she deserves to be spoiled (as long as I'm available to). Usually, east Asian women are the most feminine and fit that type that I like.
Also, I don't want and am not having kids but I would want her to contribute in some ways like doing some housework but that's the sort of thing we'd both be doing together anyway and I wouldn't say any task is exclusive for her to do.
If she gives me gifts, I would always appreciate it (although these comments don't seem to give off that impression). But from the first gift, I'd quickly try to put a stop to it. I think her gifting me things will make me feel like less of a man and would also give that impression to her too, being how petty women are with their "icks". I'd never allow a woman to provide for me even if she's just giving me gifts.
I would in that situation, thank her and be very grateful, then tell and remind her that it's not her job to be giving me gifts and that's my job to do for her.
[–]AssertiveDude 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
I personally think any woman who thought that way would make me and her incompatible. Different ways of thinking
[–]Jonesw16 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I definitely wouldn't want that kind of woman either, sounds like a nightmare. The goal would be to get the kind of woman who *would* care about my emotions and would buy me gifts and then not open up to her and not accept her gifts anyway.
[–]Lord_Philbert 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Yikes
[–]Lord_Philbert 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
This is a very unhealthy way of thinking. The goal should be to find a woman who is accepting and supportive of you. If you a woman would break up with you for crying at a funeral or opening up emotionally, then she wasn't worth dating in the first place. Your view of women is distorted. Yeah, sure, there are women in this world who will treat you differently or lose interest in you over something so petty, but they are not the majority, and they are not the kind of people who make good partners.
[–]Jonesw16 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
That would indeed be a goal and yes, you're right that type of woman isn't worth dating in the first place. But no matter what I couldn't risk being emasculated in front of her, she'd never forget it and there comes the risk of having your respect on the line. You've got to be 100% perfect at all times and can't let your armour crack.
[–]Lord_Philbert 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I know you aren't going to change your mind from some random stranger on the internet, but hear me out. I don't know how old you are, so maybe it's too late for you, but that mindset is going to cause you to be extremely emotionally stunted. You are not going to be able to form healthy relationships if you never allow yourself to be vulnerable in front of your partner.
"no matter what I couldn't risk being emasculated in front of her, she'd never forget it and there comes the risk of having your respect on the line."
Again, a woman who would even give a shit about you being emasculated and especially a woman who would lose respect for you is not a woman worth loving. Now, you have more of a point when it comes to losing the respect of other men, but like the women I discussed, the respect of these men means nothing. They are not worth gaining respect from.
Obviously your masculinity is something that you're insecure about, and I'm not saying that to be mean, I'm saying that to point out that you don't have to be. You don't have to hide behind a hard outer shell. To truly let someone into your heart is to let them past your armor, and trust them not to hurt you. If you ever want to find meaning love, you're going to have to be vulnerable.
[–]Jonesw16 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Even though my view still stands, I love hearing and respecting opposing views, I always appreciate all views and I'm very open-minded. If I wanted to pursue a relationship, I'd make sure to be the most perfect person possible, there's no room for any flaws whatsoever (I'm already doing this for me and I don't need to do it for anyone else, but I'd have to be perfect before I'd consider starting a relationship). Vulnerability is a flaw and I'd want being with me to be a luxury for her, and she would have to be the type who doesn't demand that in the first place. I know the risks of being vulnerable to women and I can't allow myself to be emasculated in any way.
I used to lack masculinity and it was awful, I absolutely hated it and now that I've found the ways to improve and change myself around, I will never stop and I will become as masculine as possible, I'm not 100% there yet and I'll keep pushing on forever even after I'm perfect.
"To truly let someone into your heart is to let them past your armor, and trust them not to hurt you." that's like putting your head in a guillotine, giving her the rope, and trusting her not to chop your head off. With a hard, unbreakable shell, women will look at me with admiration and treat me like a normal respectable human being which is all I want.
I don't want women to love me, all I want is for women to respect me for once in my life. That's all I'm asking for, just to be respected. Because respect goes so much further and in order to be loved, you need to be respected. Again, I don't want love, I've never had it before nor do I care for it. All I want is to be respected by women. It would feel so nice to be in control of myself for once.
I'm 20 btw.

[–]Smoking-Bandit 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
The thing is, I would buy gifts for someone I genuinely love and expect nothing in return because, well, I love them and want to do something special for them.
However... If I still get nothing in return (either in the form of materialism or affection) then what incentive do I have to love someone in the first place enough to buy them gifts? It's definitely not a "I bought you an expensive item, now I expect one from you" and more of a "why can't you show the same affection to me?"
