My GRANDMOTHER is like this.

She used to always spill the beans about STABBING matches she used to get into with my grandfather, and why that was the reason I never knew him.

THEN. As an adult. We did a "trial" version her moving into my house.

Stories like this are among the reasons that I. Just. Don't. Care. when women claim to have been abused. She may not have liked the abuse, but she was willing to put up with it because what she was getting out of the relationship was enough to keep her in his house and in his bed. Gee. I wonder what that was...

I've also read enough of the statistics to know that the single most common dynamic in abusive relationships is between mutual combatants, and unilateral male-on-female abuse is the least common. Also, with the tendency that people have to downplay their level of culpability in general, I'm simply not prepared to take her word for it that she was an innocent victim. Maybe she was... maybe she wasn't... but in either case she elected to stay long after it was obvious that the only smart move was to leave.

I've said it before and I'll say it again now: either women are adults or they are not. The philosophy here at WAATGM is that women are, in fact, adults capable of making their own choices, and we do not insult women by absolving them of the consequences of those choices. That's what you do with children.

People who want to have adult rights need to shoulder adult consequences. If you're too stupid to get an ID then you're not qualified to choose your congressman, and if you're too stupid to leave a relationship where you get slapped around (even if you do some slapping yourself), you're not qualified to choose your own partner.

My mother told me about a woman from her neighborhood when she was a girl (this probably would have been around the time of WW2). My mother grew up dirt-poor in the barrio, and the entire neighborhood was made up of old-school Mexicans. There was one woman whose husband used to slap her around (probably when he had too many cervezas), and my mother asked the other women why she put up with it. Their answer?

"Because she likes it."

These weren't "InCeLzzz" or "MiSoGyNiStS" here: these were married matriarchs... serious women who had lived hard lives and knew what was what... and they had neither time nor sympathy for drama queens and self-made martyrs.
