Earlier today someone posted a case of a mentally ill man getting over 2 years for massaging women’s feet or shoes without their consent. Yet here we see a woman who allegedly committed statutory rape who will serve no time at all. The sentencing disparity between female and male criminals is enormous and incredibly biased.

We see marital privilege in TV and movies all the time, not that this was what the goal was. I hope she faces some charges still.

I mean I really like this law, the 17 year old wanted this, albeit I find it creepy I know a couple that has been married for a decade under similar circumstances and aren't 'creeps' at all now.

I did point out to a very feminist colleague that people had the pitchforks out for prince Andrew because Epstein procured him a 17-yr girl. If it were a teenage boy, would there be that kind of outrage...?

Not that I think he deserves any sympathy, but there is a double-standard, and unfortunately, I have to blame men for being complicit in not standing up when we need to.

I suspect that few men have written to their representatives or lobbied for a change in law to prevent rapists from marrying their victims.

This was a very short article that tells us very little of the important details to make a judgement. But, from what we do see, it seems rather silly to compare this with sentencing for sexual abuse. 17 is over the missouri age of consent and because it was not mentioned or charged we have to assume that the boy did consent. 4 years really isn't that large an age gap so it's diffucult to compare this to a middle aged adult comming onto a teenager. The only crime that was charged was on the basis that teachers can't sleep with their students. It makes no claim that the marriage was forced so it seems that the boy genuinely wanted to help her and she did loose both her job and her teaching license. It should not have happened this way but it's really not that big a deal and it's certianly not, as much of this comment section seems to believe, evidence that the entire system is rigged and men are second class citicens.

This has been done the other way around too. People cannot be forced to testify against their spouse.
