Men aren’t going to be there for women in traditional ways and most feminists I know are losing their $hit over it.

That's a lot of words to say nothing. Physics doesn't care about your gender, it's there or not.

[–]UnderUsedTier 54 points55 points56 points 4 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

I mean its the perfect article, political but claims to be scientific, makes no real point but uses many words, students ought to learn from this writer

[–]Ganondorf-Dragmire 18 points19 points20 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The skills you are talking about are perfect for getting through bullshit essays in school. But that is about the extent of their use.

[–]knucklz74 -1 points0 points1 point 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Is there not one day that women don't say a bunch of words that don't make any f****** sense at all. It's what the f*** they do best. Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious. Phrase by Guess Who a woman. Nobody anybody got any sugar so she shut the fuk up

Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious. Phrase by Guess Who a woman

It was created by two men....

[+]BlakeSteel -38 points-37 points-36 points 4 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Learn what exactly? It's an opinion piece about another opinion. What's the problem?

And I'm not trying to be a jerk, but if you are going to claim to know what students should learn, maybe you should use correct punctuation.

[–]UnderUsedTier 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You got a stick up your ass I see

[–]SappySoulTaker 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

If you can so casually be a jerk without even trying then you should get a job as a manager somewhere, you'd fit right in.

also, Physics dont care about your feelings. either you’re right or not. no feelings involved

That's a lot of words. Is there a Cliff's Notes?

The author is saying physics has nothing to do with gender, race, or any other identity. That some other people's focus on "feminist physics" is a negative for the whole of the physics community because there is no point in physics where nature cares what gender the person studying it is. By focusing on feminist physics the author states that focus is lost on the true nature of what is actually happening. Essentially it's just saying that there is no reason to consider feminist ideas in relation to physics, because there is nothing feminist ideas can do to change the fundamentals of physics, it simply distracts from them.

[–]NoFleas 33 points34 points35 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Thanks! And that's just common sense imo. Science dgaf.

[–]LeButtMonkey 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The author is critiquing a paper that says the opposite of that

[+]Mad_Mack -59 points-58 points-57 points 4 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

The author is a chud who's taken the (admittedly stupid) term of "feminist physics" and strawmanned it to death based purely on the title.

Feminist physics sounds retarded, but exclusion in the scientific community based on ethnicity or gender is very real, which is what the authors seek to raise awareness of and combat.

Article is garbage.

[–]CentralAdmin 23 points24 points25 points 4 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Feminist physics sounds retarded, but exclusion in the scientific community based on ethnicity or gender is very real, which is what the authors seek to raise awareness of and combat.

Then feminist physics is a poor term for it. They could rather run a program to get more people into Stem rather than slapping on a label onto something that has little to do with gender.

It seems like they are looking for relevance because they have saturated other areas of academia. Why not call it Diversity in Physics or something?

[–]inzyte 13 points14 points15 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Why not just call it physics? I'm just over labeling everything

[–]Versaiteis 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

They could rather run a program to get more people into Stem rather than slapping on a label onto something that has little to do with gender.

Do you know that that's not what they're advocating for though? If you happened to find a link to the published article that's not paywalled I'd very much appreciate it; I haven't been able to.

And tbh if the label is the only problem, that sounds more like a "feels" argument. What are the actual points that the journal paper makes and with what evidence? With the editorial style of the linked post, I don't really think I can trust the author to relay anything from that paper in good faith. The first block quote isn't even from the published paper, but a letter that only made a single reference to the paper in question (it's also attacked with a sneaky little rhetorical trick but that's a different argument of substance). The other quotes which I assume are extracted from the paper, but are so chewed up in the prose that it's hard to tell what's a quote from the paper and what's just being inserted and mocked. The quotes all seem to be one-liners too (often not even quoting the entire sentence) where we just have to trust the author of the article to provide the proper context as they don't seem to be giving an indication that they're including it verbatim.

The second large block-quote seems to be from the paper which is the largest quote in the article with only 2 sentences. The published paper is around 18-20 pages so I'd think there would be much more to go off of here.

White men and Asians are excluded. Colleges are clawing in order to get women and black people

[–]Dnile1000BC 27 points28 points29 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

This is what happens when feminism is accepted as sane and logical instead of cancer.

[–]pcetcedce 57 points58 points59 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I have experienced this 1st hand at my alma mater Bates College. They had a committee last year that recommended all departments include 2 classes focusing on DEI. An intro class and a senior class and this includes all sciences. I have read statements by students who complain they can't learn computer science because there was too much time talking about DEI. The science department I briefly worked for was working very hard to make it a safe space for LGBTQ and POC. Safe from what? Classic science certainly has been based upon white men and much racism and sexism existed, but that thankfully is changing. But altering the curriculum to essentially remind everybody how bad white men are is ridiculous, And treating people of color like delicate flowers flowers is not the way to do it.

[–]SuspiciousFragrance 16 points17 points18 points 4 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

Is that why the introduction of nigonometry was suggested, to combat the racism of regular math

[–]notrealmate 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

You mean the California math framework that aims to make everyone dumber to narrow the gap?

[–]Goldmansachs3030 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

yep

[–]src88 6 points7 points8 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It's getting to a point where I can't tell what's real or the onion. The left is cancer to everything it touches.

[–]Mustard_on_tap 14 points15 points16 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

As John McWhorter has noted in a new book, Woke Racism, this type of thinking isn't grounded in anything other than faith and "muh feels." Thinking like this is a religion, isn't science. This is disgraceful.

[–]MrSnrlub 4 points5 points6 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I just need to know if they will be working on any bridges, public works projects or buildings. So I can avoid those places.

[–]earathar89 5 points6 points7 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Post modernism trying to break into physics. Great.

[–]LeButtMonkey 4 points5 points6 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

“My feminist training has taught me that science is a socially constructed artifact of human culture.” how is this relevant?

[–]Jaboodlesbot 7 points8 points9 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Feminist Physics? Is that about calculating the air resistance of someone with tits or something?

[–]ThatParticularPencil 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

TLDR, what is the gist

[–]ignatztempotypo 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Lordy, a complete mess from beginning to end.

[–]YourPillsAintWorkin 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Well we've seen how they build bridges. I can't wait to see their rockets.

[–]AltruisticPumpkin0 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

That reads like an epiphany of a 3 year old.

[–]bgovern 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

We hope to push our community towards equity and inclusion

Remember, when they talk about 'equity' it means equal outcomes, regardless of the means to achieve them. If that means we enter a scientific dark age because poorer quality papers from women have to be published in order to achieve their goals, they are OK with that.

I find the foundational assumption of things like this laughable. They imply that a brilliant breakthrough scientific achievement would not be published because a woman or BIPOC authored it. OK, let's do blind submissions then. Except they are against those too. Equity is just an excuse for political manipulation.

[–]Gaiinahat -1 points0 points1 point 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Some day, physicists of the male persuasion will build an ark, and those of us men who are still sane will jettison off into the universe, and leave this crazy ass carnival ride of a planet behind.

[–]StonedAtWorkAccount -1 points0 points1 point 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You are all just a bunch of women hating retarded neckbeards. Practically none of you actually read this article, and half those who did managed to do so with zero critical thinking. You are all using this as rage bait to further your preexisting fuckwad beliefs. Fucking morons the lot of you.

[+]Orzine -20 points-19 points-18 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The guy writing this is kind of an ass… but he does have a point.

[–]Agitatedsala666 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

OK then the basis of Feminist Physics is in direct competition with Race Physics. Look at the nations who have excelled in physics, they are not just Europeans. Silly argument to me. If you have taken a good look at the physical sciences, women have been under represented but so have Africans, Latinx, Asians etc. I say this tongue in cheek.
