I work in a callcentre that takes sick calls for several different companies, you will be amazed what people think is a legitimate excuse, having a cold sore on your lip apparently means you cannot work your packing job in a warehouse, period cramps is another. Then they call a day later and ask why they haven't been rostered on for any shifts and I have to hold back explaining to them that people who call up sick for 80 percent of their shifts tend not to be given work.

Even with all the stay-at-home moms, teachers, child care workers, time off for caring for family etc, women as a group on average still earn close to what men as a group do on average

I work with two women that do comparable overnight hours to me, we all got the same base pay and benefits, as we worked the same hours our pay was identical nearly to the cent. Yet they are a rare breed, my company is mostly female employees and trying to get one to cover and overnight shift if one of us are sick is like walking down the street and just happening to kick your toe on 20 pounds of gold bullion.

The actual reason is that women have children and have to go on maternity leave. from a company perspective this can make management positions be favored to men since they might not want a manager to go on leave. This could be counteracted by giving both men and women the same material/paternal leave
Plus women are still expected to take care of the children more than the men. More women leave their jobs when they have a child than men and this is purely cultural. Cultural norms take generations to change

The men have more ambition is not necessillary silly, but let's explore it for a second. My mom who's in her 70's said when she went to school the options for women were basically 1) Secretary, 2) Teacher, 3) Nurse. That dynamic existed for a very long time and despite the ability to go into any field of their choosing women are still dominating those jobs. I'm not sure if it's comfort, or following in footsteps, but women for whatever reason aren't pursuing the highest paying jobs and settling for the career pathways that have always been available vs pursuing new career fields.
I won't say that it comes down to ambition, but maybe it's something more akin to courage? I say that loosely, but by that I mean that men are possibly more willing to fail by pursuing these fields, or fail by trying to open the doors of a new business. I'm not sure why this dynamic continues, but to just dismiss this reality where men are still pursuing the higher paying jobs in higher percentages than women is worth exploring...

Part of the reason why this kind of dynamics are amntained or changed so slowlly could be becouse of the job enviroment being setted in a very polariced position, the fact that some especific jobs were so overpopulated by one sex for x reason in the past (like nurses or car mechanics) is still a problem because people tend to be less comfortable if their enviroment is very heavy in the oposite gender, so even if they have the option to chose it they dont see social feedback of people of their gender making that choice and they could feel that maybe the wouldnt be very comfortable in jobs with to much of the oposite gender and think more about other options.
