Talk to your lawyer. Random people on the internet can’t advise you with so little info. House/assets/kids/savings/investments etc all play a major factor.

If your wage and bills situation allow you to recover that $20k within a reasonable timescale and it won't put you in too much financial hardship....DO IT. I'm not normally one to agree to demands but in this case giving more money to lawyers is something I wouldn't do. I hate family law lawyers with a passion. $20k might just be worth it to get rid of her. However I would ask your lawyer to make sure the agreement states that if you accept the $20k offer, she cannot ever come back for more, make sure that $20k is deducted from any community property sharing etc...

Why do you want to divorce. If it's something like adultery then it would be easy. If it's because she is abusive you need proof. If it's because you think it just doesn't work out then it would be a bit harder.
What do you think it would look like during the divorce. Divorce can be done even if just one person wants the divorce. Technically you don't need her agreement. And when you don't have anything then she cannot contest for the split of assets so it should be easy.

But go to subreddits like

They should give you better advice. But include more informations than just what you initially gave us.

Include

Why you want to divorce her, state and county you live in, her reasoning why she wants to keep the marriage or only accepting 20k, how long you were together.

Your assets (doesn't matter if only you have something, in marriage your assets are shared)

Basically give as much useful info as possible.

It's a simple case.

Don't cave in. It rarely stops there, demands will only increase.

She will need to reevaluate her stance when you go for a contested divorce because she will need a lawyer too.

Check with your laywer though.

Obviously your lawyer can advise better than any of us, but I would go with option 3. A divorce is unlikely to cost 20k unless she has the money to drag it out. If you pay her, then she knows that she has that control over you, and can make similar demands in the future. Even if you negotiate and reach an agreement, there is nothing stopping her from saying "give me another 20k or I'll scrap this agreement and sue you".

not legal advice, not a lawyer. I don't see how that's different from a legal settlement. She wants $20k cash and you keep all the assets. And I take it you don't have kids, so no child support?

I would take the quick way out if I were you. Just keep in mind that whatever you are paying, she also has to pay. So if you have to spend $30k fighting over assets, she could spend the same or more, depleting the assets and no one gets it.

Be sure to ask your lawyer about alimony. If you are entitled to it, don't lose out.

Surely the only thing contestable in a divorce are splitting of the assets and how children will be supported: when one person doesn't want to be in a relationship, the other shouldn't be able to stop them leaving. If there are no assets or children, there is nothing to contest.

If the threat of extortion is in writing, I would think that should be grounds for a different legal case.

What are the downsides to a permanent separation instead of a divorce? I should imagine not granting a divorce means the parties can't legally remarry, but I doubt a man would want to remarry after being burned by a woman: on the other hand, the shoe might be on the other foot when the woman wants to remarry, but can't if you don't grant a divorce.
