Jesus Christ….this reminds me of my sister. My sister quite literally thinks all conservatives are racist and homophobic-and if your black or gay and vote for them your have “internalized racism” or colorism. If my child ever has such bad political beliefs (like joining the KKK or something), then i would be more disappointed in myself for failing them as a parent. But to disown a child is just asinine. To do so is to admit that you failed as a parent and are now opting out of fixing your own mistakes. Or its admitting that you're not strong enough to deal with raising a kid. Either way, looks bad for the parent imo, and i feel horrible for the child that has to deal with that.

So as a European, im so fucking done how americans view politics. Its not that big of a fucking deal. I myself have a very different political view than the rest of my family yet the question of disowning me is not even around. Honestly I hate both parties in american politics because they use everything as a political weapon and leave no gray area, and unfortunately american politics have a huge impact on smaller countries like mine so for every bad decision, after poor american people who dont even have a choice we gotta suffer.

It would be a very long conversation explaining our positions and ending up on more or less same page. In most cases if I argue something, I am impossible to win against without lying and not engaging the argument. Parent/child situation neither get those outs.

The left (any branch; not limited to them but that's the situation in the post) needs that attitude to maintain the echo chamber necessary for their worldview to make sense. People on the right tend to almost always engage with the argument and concede when they are wrong.

Between a parent and child there must be a bond of trust that even if they cannot fully articulate their position they 100% care about you. I have disowned relatives but for better reasons.

I have to be honest. I wouldn’t disown but it would be a rocky road if my kid came home touring the merits of non binary pan sexual transgenderism.

I refuse to entertain the notion and am doing my best to instill normal values before the public schools and Twitter get a chance to instill theirs.

This is so common in the US. Mothers, both parents really, for some reason have this insanely low tolerance for sons. Nearly every single American I have met who has been kicked out is a male. I know of one woman, maybe 40 men, who have been kicked out. And a lot of these guys say they were kicked out at 16 or 17.

One of the boys I mentor (he is 13) was put into care after his mother kicked his brother out after forcing him to get emancipated right after he turned 16 then kicked him out. The boy I mentor literally just ran away from home and refuses to speak to his mother, so he is in the system now.

Im on the right politically speaking my brother is on the left and i love him just as much as a person. My friends have varying political views and i like that because they can say how they look at things and its different from my own view, which is fine, thats how a democracy works.

We sit and talk about what we believe and think and no one judges anyone and takes a genuine interest in what i or someone else is saying and they are free to say what they agree with and what they disagree with and what they themselves thinks about the same issue.

Cutting ties with someone because they hold a different political position is just insane to me. They are friends and family FIRST what their political opinions are, are way down the list.
