From what I've seen as an autistic person, "autism acceptance" is mostly virtue signaling, and so are the people who tell autistic people that they need to have more "empathy." Meanwhile, many of these same NTs who tell autistic people this bullshit will never try to empathize with autistic people enough to understand their worldview even a little bit. Keep in mind that these two studies were done in 2018-2019, long after "autism acceptance" was entrenched in American culture.

So, in sum, autistic people are at least as empathetic as NTs, but NTs don't like us (presumably even under the guise of "autism acceptance") because we don't do as many fake facial contortions as NTs naturally do.

man this study and especially the comments in this thread hit really close to home

the symptoms of "dislike" you can easily spot in other people's behavior do make a lot more sense - other ugly people don't get the same reactions or not nearly as much anyway

some people talked about perceived empathy and that's really what it's all about, "autistic" (or anyone) simply not 'performing' for other people, not acting 'emotionally helpful' nor 'showing' emotions actively really puts off a lot of the low IQ crowd (=normies) that can only communicate in emotions/obvious actions

this also goes for people that might communicate differently, either being vulgar or seemingly insulting or accents/foreign roots - they cannot read between the lines and just go with the 'content' of the message but take it completely at face value and get offended or dislike it

they cannot comprehend that someone might not react like a trained monkey and screech at every information so that others can "share" in the experience, they literally either lack the mental capacities or empathy to understand someone being different than them

it reeks of entitlement in a sense, because you don't see people that are "stoic" yell at others to suit their needs 24/7

Imo depending on severity it can be a slew of reasons. Ive been friends with autistic people and have seen a lot of different types.

Some dont have hygienic awareness, some have anti-social behaviour, and some are just zero personality... All unlikable things. The thing is, the same can be said for "normal" people, but these said problems are exasperated by the autism.
