I think a part of the reason war has been a default for mankind seemingly since mankind began has something to do with the fact that society needed something to do with all of its men who weren't at the political elite who had access to all the women.

No lol, war has been a default since it's an expected corollary of ideologies clashing over a long time and/or classic imperialism. There weren't overpopulated mass of men in the 16th century or some old time period.

Nations and wars at this scale are a modern invention. When we used to be tribal based 10,000 years ago and earlier, there was still tribal warfare, but not nearly as devastating as it is now. Most people were happy with a full belly and a warm wet place to stick their dick in. What more does a man need?

Men who aren't oligarchs/political elite/ultra-wealthy (enough to not have to participate in drone culture) essentially function as organic robots helping to maintain the funhouse that is the world/society of oligarchs/political elite/ultra-wealthy. "Society" is what they sell those robots as their world, and most buy it. Of the few who dont, they usually, by design, blame those who aren't even responsible for the state of things.

So I'd say war is less of a way to cull, and more of a thing like the state saying: "Imma use these tools (humans at war) to try to achieve the results I desire."

Wars existed long before there were nation states. In fact, they had far higher casualty rates than any modern war in the last few centuries.

You need to go back further to hunter-gatherer tribes. There is abundant evidence of wars waged between such tribes in modern times for the express purpose of getting more women, not solely for the leaders of the tribes, but for all men who already had wives but wanted more.

yeaaaa no - the elites are more concerned with gaining themselves and not getting their hands dirty, women aren’t as physically strong and are less expendable, therefore they were less likely to fight - also being drafted wasn’t really a choice and being in army wasn’t really something one wound seek out most times - and when it was seeked out it was usually cause being in the army offered food and board, and then in later times it become a matter of national, social or religious pride
