Depends on your state, but it’s typically date of separation aka date you file with the court.

If you sell something it’s still community property meaning she’s entitled to half. Post date separation the money you make is your property (post any support due to wife or child).

Personally I’d just do it, document it yourself and worry about it down the road if it becomes a deal. Because seriously if she’s going to make it a deal then it’s going to cost more lawyer hours for her (and you) than it’s worth and literally her paycheck is an easy pushback against what you’re talking about.

Until you file, you can do whatever the hell you want. I sold thousands of $$ worth of stuff before I filed for divorce, and donated a pile of things as well.

If you haven’t filed, then in most states you are fine to sell an asset and use it to pay reasonable expenses/debts (so not on affair partners or gambling). Once the money is “gone” from the marriage, ie it’s in a third-party’s hands, it’s no longer divisible in divorce and she cannot claim half of the asset’s value.

Now, if you sell an asset but keep some of the cash proceeds in a bank account, it’s likely still marital funds and will be divisible.
