"I have oneitis/problem/blah blah"

"Lift"

I now understand that this is great advice. I'm skinny, 35 and starting to develop a bit of belly fat. Girls like me because I'm very tall (6'4") but I want to be BIG and tall. With a six-pack.

Before I hit the gym I wanted to do the 30 day/100 push-ups challenge just to give me some initial strength so I won't be completely humiliated on day 1. It's going ok. I've nearly finished the 30 days and while I'm no bigger, I feel like push-ups are much easier so I must have gotten a bit stronger.

Now as I'm approaching serious gym time, my problem hits me in the face - what to do, where to start?

Here are just some of the contradictions I've had in the way of advice from people:

"You're an ectomorph so you'll never get big arms. Just work on your charisma/game."

"I've seen skinny ectomorphs get huge - your genes are not relevant, it's all about putting the effort in"

"At 35 you're too old to start, don't bother as you'll waste time and not get big like you want to"

"Pah! You're only 35, you're in your prime - spend the next 5 years sculpting an amazing body and you will reap the rewards sexually"

"You have high blood pressure so there's a lot of lifts you shouldn't be doing unless you want to give yourself a stroke"

"Lifting reduces high blood pressure"

"You can't get bigger and lose your belly fat at the same time"

"You can get bigger and lose your belly fat at the same time"

"Buy the insanity workout programme, you will build muscle"

"Don't buy insanity, you will just burn fat and get smaller"

"For bigger arms buy some dumbells and lift them every other day"

"Dumbells won't get your arms much bigger, as you'll plateau really quickly - you need to get to the gym where you can pile on more weight"

"You will get bigger doing body weight exercises, look how ripped blokes in prison get"

"Body weight is not enough, you will get stronger endurance wise but not bigger"

"You need to hire a personal trainer who can show you the way"

"Don't hire a personal trainer they are a waste of money"

Hopefully the above demonstrates my utter despair and confusion at this point. With so many lifting options on the table I simply don't know where to start. But start I must - I know this. At 35 and with time so precious I don't want to spend a year or more travelling down a path that leads to no significant results.

Hopefully someone can provide some clarity based on my own personal situation/build etc before I start, to point me in the right direction.

Thanks
