I agree with you that taking the label off can open up a discussion that would otherwise be impossible. I have two younger sisters from my Dad's second marriage, in their early 20s. One of them shuts down and gets very angry the moment I have anything to say about equality, as she knows it is not going to end with me agreeing with her, and I'm always right.

The other one is much more open to listening, and will agree with most of what I say, but her happy, chirpy reply is usually:

Yeah, but women. *shrugs*

And this is what we face: a battle against biology. Women support women. Men support women. It's hard-wired into us. There's no one to support men, and both sexes' biology has a knee-jerk reaction to supporting men, because women.

I see a parallel to feminism here to a degree. Thus let's not get hung up on the label and focus on the issues.

If ditching the label is what's necessary to fix the issues, it's a sacrifice I'm willing to make.

I agree with shit-zen-giggles that it’s the issues that are important. I’ve often said if most parents understood the discrimination their sons face in education, it wouldn’t be a men’s issues, parents would be demanding change.

Opponents use ad hominems and straw man’s to misrepresent men’s rights. I it’s best to dismiss those and focus on the issues.

That's how propaganda works. There has been a lot of that going around lately. Look at the current Russia crap happening. If you even question anything you're labeled a Nazi, even though it all looks questionable. People are easily swayed to not look deeper into things if they are labeled in a negative way just for doing so. Both sides of an argument will always have thier faults, but if you demonize one to that point then few will look into the other.

Look at what feminism can get away with doing or what thier members can say on reddit without any warnings. We have to carefully watch what gets posted or said. I doubt we'd last a day by switching genders and copying thier posts. It's not because our argument is wrong, it's because MRAs have been labeled in the wrong, and feminism has been labeled the right side for years. Both sides have great points and arguments and most would agree with each other on gender equality. However since we are the wrong side our arguments are automatically dismissed because we are "misogynistic incels that demand sex". The main problem is we do have that type going around claiming they are MRAs, so now you have to prove you're not one. It's easy to dismiss an evil person's views without even hearing them.

This is the exact same - and stupid - mentality of 'if you believe in equality, you're a feminist' of Emma Watson, et al.

You could take this whole thing and swap it over to "A letter to non-feminists..." and its pretty much exactly what they believe. They don't live in the same universe as us; you can't reason with them like this.

How can you even compare male circumcision to what happens to girls! Circumcision has a whole heap of medical benefits but FGM is done solely to control women and eliminate sexual pleasure!

That male victims of abuse shouldn't be ignored or mocked?

I think it is important to talk about ‘men’s rights’, or at least ‘men’s human rights’ explicitly. Otherwise ‘men’s issues’ will always be second to women’s rights.

Naming something as a human rights issue means that it falls within a government’s obligation to protect, respect, and fulfill human rights.

The idea behind MRAs everyone can get behind. But in practice it becomes endless whining about feminism, blaming feminism and women for everything, and constant posts about women doing bad things.

In theory, MRAs are great. In practice, it’s just angry men that want to vent about women and feminism.

This might not be super related but I’d say I’m an MRA but I refuse to tell anyone that I am because of the potential backlash. Since supporting men apparently means I hate women. Anyone else?
