Men do indeed get it. Most of the women are getting it through heterosexual sex, no? But it's easier to transmit through non-keratinized skin and women have more of that in the genital area. You can still get it through exposure to keratinized tissue, though. Condoms help but the virus can exist outside of areas covered by a condom.

The test that catches it in women is the standard pap test that's routinely done in a regular gynecological exam. It's more likely to be found. To test men, they have to do a specific kind of swabbing for it.

There has also been more of a focus on women and HPV because the higher incidence of HPV-related cancer in women, but men do still get it and do also contract cancer related to it.

The vaccine is approved for both boys and girls, and both boys and girls have access to it. But here, as far as I know, girls are vaccinated through a school vaccination program, while boys would have to pay for the vaccine through a community health nurse or doctor's office.

There is also a serious lack of awareness that HPV causes oral/throat cancers, and that such cancers, which used to be an "old man's disease" when found in men (due to years of tobacco use), they are increasingly showing up in men under 30 who have contracted HPV orally through sexual activity.

A former coworker of mine has a young male friend (24) who was recently diagnosed with terminal throat cancer (started in the throat and then metastasized). I commented that he almost certainly got it because of HPV contracted during oral sex. She said, "Oh, but he's not gay," as if it just never occurred to her that a woman could give a man a sexually transmitted disease through cunnilingus (admittedly, she's not what I'd call bright, though she's a very pleasant person).

There are tons of campaigns (from TV ads to pamphlets and posters in doctors' offices) educating young women on the dangers of HPV and its link to cervical cancer. You see the odd (as in, I've seen two, both linked here) newspaper story on the link between HPV, oral sex and oral/throat cancers, and the increasing number of young men afflicted. But you don't see TV ads or other campaigns warning young men (or women) about HPV-caused oral/throat cancer, and in places where Gardisil is free for girls, boys and young men still sometimes have to pay to protect themselves.
