Wow, now this is a good post. I can't believe it got by on Alternet. It will either be completely ignored by commenters or brigaded by feminists.

Ronald Weitzer, Professor of Sociology at George Washington University and author of ‘ Sex Trafficking and the Sex Industry: The Need for Evidence Based Theory and Legislation, explains this motif: “NGOs have figured out that they can appeal to the public, donors and funders if they emphasize sex trafficking of girls, which has a very clear purpose in attracting government funding, public and media attention. If resources are being misappropriated to less frequent types of trafficking then there is a danger that others who are victimized like hidden populations are being ignored. Moreover, if labor trafficking is much more prevalent in the United States than sex trafficking as the International Labor Organization says it is, than it suggests we should alter the balance toward labor trafficking,” he said.

Really can't believe this made it through. Especially with 40 percent women traffickers.

Slightly off-topic usually female sex tourists get a free pass and give it a different name as well.

fantastic article. It is important people get past the girls are victims/men are perps and really open their eyes to all the variations. This will allow us to get help to more of the victims and bust more perps. It is important because women can often fly under the radar since people don't expect them to be involved.

But your title says "more boys are victims" and the article says half the victims are boys. Seems a little misleading to me.

Yep, great post. I think the first bullet point in the article is slightly misleading because it seems to me there's a difference between sexually exploited youth in the USA and sex trafficking in particular. That said, much of the article fits with what I've previously read. As /u/nihilist_nancy says, the final point is one of the most interesting, full of links to follow up on.

Almost all of the youth (91%) said that they dealt mainly with male customers, but 11% of the girls and 40% of the boys said that they had served a female client (including 14 boys that said that they exclusively served female clients).

I think you might be overselling this point slightly. If 60% of boys and 89% of girls have never served a female client, and only 9% mostly serve female clients, is it really accurate to headline this with "many women are buyers"?

This is such a horrible practice, it drives me up a wall when I see posters around campus up about female sex trafficking and no mention of boys. How can you ignore an entire demographic?? How?

I think the article points to some really important measures to combat this. Namely, to legalise and normalise sex work. Therefore people who are willing sex workers and are happy with their work are not conflated with people who are trafficked.

Of course, it is the radfems who are opposed to this. Indeed, it was the feminists who were majorly responsible for the outlawing of brothels in America during the 1920's.

Like many things, criminalising just tends to bring more problems than it solves.

What does this mean:
