I got a kick out of the discussion on the wiki article for this... back in 2008:

You have to kidding me if you think this was a real or legitimate game, Billie Jean King is feminist is now was then. Riggs decided to help the cause and they cooked up or rigged the whole thing. No one, I mean no one, thought this was a real game, just look at some of the flashy things Riggs did to promote and during the match. He was a good guy who decided to contribute to the popular feminist movement of the time.

It should be very obvious that this was rigged.

Look at the 1998 version of the "Battle of the Sexes" when the men's player ranked 203 took on BOTH of the Williams sisters in a single set each and destroyed them one after the other 6-2, 6-1.

Or the 2003 version when long-retired 43-year old Yannick Noah played world number 1 Justine Henin. He wore a dress and mostly played trick shots, but hammered her 4–6, 6–4, 7–6.

Even Serena Williams, on being invited to challenge Andy Murray, said she doubted she'd win a point.

This is all nonsense. If they thought they were equal they would just desegregate the leagues, which I can only assume didn't happen because people are here talking about this.

I'm not entirely sure I believe this. It could just be that an overconfident Riggs got his ass handed to him. Unless Riggs actually comes out and admits it, I remain skeptical.
