This is an important point, and it is one of the reasons why I disagree with the claim (made by some feminists) that opposition to homosexuality is just an epiphenomenon of misogyny.

Historically, discrimination against homosexuality has always made femme gay men the primary target. Lesbians typically have either flown under the radar or been outright fetishized.

If homophobia were just repackaged misogyny, you'd expect femme lesbians to be the most oppressed gay demographic. In reality they're probably the least. They're outright fetishized.

If homophobia were just repackaged misogyny, you'd expect butch lesbians to be oppressed less than femme lesbians. But we all know that the stereotype lesbian is the biker dyke.

If homophobia were just repackaged misogyny, you'd expect lesbians to get gay bashed more than gay men, you'd expect lesbians to be the primary target of anti-gay laws, you'd expect the popular negative conception of gay people to be lesbians (with a secondary acknowledgment of gay men).

Homophobia is more about a disdain towards gender-transgressive behavior than it is about femmephobia, and it disproportionately effects men because a man's social gender identity has always been more tied to his actions than a woman's. Femininity is socially conceptualized as innate and stable, masculinity is socially conceptualized as an earned status and ideal to strive for.

Actually, you wanna know the real kicker in all of this? It was (up until very recently) the policy of the United States Department of Defense and the United States Central Command for military members deployed to the CENTCOM Area of Responsibility.

Source: General Order Number 1 Section 3.-Prohibited Activities, Item R, pg 5.

Officially, this would seem to logically dictate that no individual (cishet, straight, gay, whatever) would be allowed to cohabitate with the type of sexual partner they would be attracted to.

In reality, this meant that the Department of Defense was basically condoning female homosexual activity and condemning male homosexuality as well as any and all heterosexual activity in general.

I mean they do essentially punish these men for having sex with other men by placing them in an environment where they can only have sex with other men.

Girl on girl is probably allowed firstly because the above discriminatory men dont have to worry about thier own sexuality being challanged and also because lets face it.......its hot.
