It can't be stressed enough that the Western world is in no way, shape or form a "rape culture", and hasn't been since at least medieval times.

[–]Urishima 7 points8 points9 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Rape was never acceptable within your in-group. Shit like that was reserved for the out-group.

[–]paracog 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

If women could, for a period of time--say a month--experience a healthy male sex drive, they would understand that culture is in place to prevent rape.

I had some Jezebel-reading chick in my office once try to make a comment about that song being about date-rape and I said "the female is putting up a charade of resistance because she doesn't want to feel like a slut." She maybe half entertained that as a possible interpretation. Half.

Millennials, who seem to think that nothing of note happened before they were born, seem prone to ripping everything out of their appropriate historical context and believing that nothing predated the 20th century except for pure bigotry, which is probably why they seemed to think the Ghostbusters remake was the first female-led comedy in history or something.

It's a good thing none of them have seen Tootsie, it would be considered transphobic today.

That's very much the proper spirit. When reading a text, one really needs to make an effort to figure-out the author's intentions. If you don't do that, you're just making shit up, perhaps even ascribing to the author their opposite intentions.

who seem to think that nothing of note happened before they were born

That's more of a baby boomer thing actually. Also I'm willing to be you are a Millennial.

[–]fengpi 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago* (25 children) | Copy Link

Never heard of Gen-X, huh? I guess I shouldn't be surprised.

Let's just say that Boomers were casually referring to us as slackers, ne'er-do-wells and lazy bums when you were in diapers, even as we were teaching them how to use goddamned computers. But, again, that would be ancient history and therefore beneath notice.

I am not without sympathy. The Boomers may have dumped shit on us but they dumped radioactive waste on you. The attitude seems to have been "we're gonna die soon anyway, it don't matter what we do no more."

[–]rocelot7 -1 points0 points1 point 8 years ago (24 children) | Copy Link

Never heard of Gen-X

There worse. I was being polite in my assumption. While you just assume ignorance. You bitch about it happening to you then fall guilty of it in the same breath.

The Boomers may have dumped shit on us but they dumped radioactive waste on you.

No you guys have. Jesus fucking Christ the least you can admit that you're not powerless slacker children anymore. You're authority right now. The counter culture is against the culture you've put in place.

[–]tmone 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link

authority? the fuck are you on, kid? ohhh noeess.. someone's talked shit about the young generation and you have a problem with it. deal with it. learn to take criticism. especially when its not entirely directed to you.

[–]fengpi 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I thought I was being rather gentle in my criticism, too.

[–]rocelot7 -1 points0 points1 point 8 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

Wow, I criticize your generation and you immediately project. Maybe take your own advice instead of blaming everything on the generation that came before, and came after, you.

[–]tmone 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

Firstly. I'm a millennial. Well. I'm at the older end but still. I'm not the one getting bent out of shape every time someone takes notice on my generations bullshit. And that's what it is. Bullshit. So the fuck what? Deal with it and move on.

[–]rocelot7 -1 points0 points1 point 8 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

Who is the biggest millennial celebrity?

[–]tmone 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

In interested to see where you take this.

I have no idea. 1

[–]rocelot7 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Pewdiepie. Millennials aren't just causing a major cultural shift, but creating the first legitimate counter cultural movement since the 60's. Beyond fashion and music Millennials have only begun to make there mark on governments, institutions, and corporations. Most of what we're seeing is the whiplash created by the previous generation(s.) You can look at whats going on in college campuses and pissed at our generation, but those kids didn't teach themselves.

[–]fengpi -1 points0 points1 point 8 years ago* (13 children) | Copy Link

I politely assumed a minimal level of competence and good faith on your part, assumptions which are belied by the weirdly oddball and uncharitable things you've been blurting-out since then. And ignorance is a politer assumption than malicious stupidity. Silly me.

You're authority right now

My Boomer bosses beg to differ. A lot of them ain't retiring until they're dead.

[–]rocelot7 -2 points-1 points0 points 8 years ago (12 children) | Copy Link

Largest voting public. Hold most of the careers. Hold most of the mid level government positions. Majority of the heads in education. Just because your boss isn't doesn't mean your generation is not in charge. Your generation is just as, if not more, responsible than boomers for the cultural we're in right now. Millennials are just entering these positions, we haven't done shit yet beyond fashion and music.

[–]fengpi -1 points0 points1 point 8 years ago* (11 children) | Copy Link

Largest voting public.

Pew Research says you're wrong, Boomers were 48 million voters while Gen-Xers were 35 million. Considering that the number of Millennials and Gen-X combined have only recently eclipsed Boomers and older, Gen-X can not a majority make... Really, you've got some of your basic facts mixed-up. Take that bee out of your bonnet first and then maybe we can talk.

[–]rocelot7 -1 points0 points1 point 8 years ago* (10 children) | Copy Link

Your the guy asserting your generation had no affect on the culture.

[–]fengpi 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link

So now it's control of the culture you're steamed about rather than voting and (before that) careers and (before that) Boomers as the primary offenders of being ahistoric about pop-culture. Christ, you're all over the map today.

Sheesh, if my mild, gentle, tame generalization about Millennials at the beginning of this ridiculous exchange was enough to set you into a tizzy like this, then I don't know how you manage to function in the real world.

[–]rocelot7 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

So you do believe your generation has had no cultural effect?

[+]ronswansonaswansong -6 points-5 points-4 points 8 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

so this "chick" in your office is representative of all millennials?

#MillenialsAreTrash

[–]fengpi 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

I'm pretty sure she was Gen-X. But with the mind of a child. So maybe a Millennial in spirit ;)

It's not personal, I'm an asshole to everybody.

[–]Aivias 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Am millennial, my peers are almost without exception gutless cowards afraid to say anything that might make someone, somewhere not like them. Social media and a constant thirst for validation has ruined my generation to the point where most conversations I have with any one of them is identical to any other.

[–]ronswansonaswansong 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

As an 'older' millennial, I have not found this to be the case at all. Maybe there's a regional component or other factors at play. Painting with such a broad brush results in generalizations that don't make sense. I have very little in common with someone who is 20 years younger than me, but here we are in the same generation.

[–]omegaphallic 6 points7 points8 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Feminists can't tell the difference between a seduction and rape amymore.

[–]w1g2 3 points4 points5 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

In fact it's a song about a woman finding a way to exercise sexual agency in a patriarchal society designed to stop her from doing so.

Or maybe for most of history if an unmarried woman had sex she was extremely likely to become pregnant at some point, and before the recent invention of paternity tests there would be no way to tell who the father was except believing it was whoever she pointed her finger at, and so she would likely end up alone to raise a child. People thought that was a bad deal and so heavily discouraged against it.

Psst, also men were discouraged against having sex before marriage. But, as is still the case today, a lot of women find manwhores attractive so didn't care.

It's a song about a society where a woman isn't allowed to say yes... which means it's also a society where women don't have a clear and unambiguous way to say no.

For claiming to be a history nerd, this comment kind of makes me think they don't know that much about history. If a good girl in a society where people, but particularly women, shouldn't have sex before marriage, is the kind who should never have a reputation for being amenable to the implication of sexual advances, you're going to be taught to vehemently and clearly refuse such advances if anything just to save your reputation.

Why do you think it has for so long been socially acceptable for women to slap men just for saying the wrong thing?
