“Rolling Stone has taken full responsibility for our actions in reporting Jackie’s allegations, and we wish that the fraternity and plaintiffs would do the same,” the statement said.

The magazine also argues that the former fraternity members’ claims fail because the men did not suffer any actual harm or damages as a result of the article.

Wasn't every single ground floor window in their fraternity broken?

And there has been an widespread and partially successful push to shut down fraternities partly as a result of this article.

I'm pretty sure some of the members of that frat actually received threats, their house was vandalized, and the university banned them from holding any functions or activities on campus for a few weeks starting from when the article was published.

Their house and, in some cases, their personal lives were surrounded and besieged by a mob of angry and violent people - that kind of thing creates PTSD and since they are young men it will probably go unrecognized.

Yeah, that's bullshit they've taken full responsibility, I honestly now after seeing these types of news outlets and how they behave even when they're caught blatantly lying that it would be a public service to the communities they've affected for them to go bankrupt.

These media groups will die out by the time I am done on this planet, they are constant disease on everyone's minds.

What responsibility should the frat take?

That's like saying the lynch mob and lynching victim need to both take equal responsibility for their actions.

[–]Tedesche 16 points17 points18 points 8 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Rolling Stone is defending itself against a defamation lawsuit over a discredited article about a University of Virginia gang rape by arguing that members of a school fraternity knew about discrepancies in the woman’s claims weeks before the article was published and should have warned the magazine.

So, pretty much straight-up victim blaming. Nice, Rolling Stone, nice.

[–]Leinadro 13 points14 points15 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

So basically, "The frat knew their were holes in Jackie's story and should have warned us about them!"

The magazine is actually saying the accused should have warned them about the story not being solid before they ran the story?

The accused is responsible for warning the media that the accuser's has discrepancies?

The fuck?

"We can't be bothered to check the verity of our facts—that's actually the public's job. Shame on you, public!"

[–]thisistheguyinthepic 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

"Do our jobs for us! What do you think we are, journalists?"

If I claimed that drinking Pepsi would give 1/100 women in a particular location an STD, I think Pepsi would sue my ass off.

LOL! Are you kidding me? If thats the case, then how come you settled a lawsuit with them for $ 1.65 million dollars?

[–]ipwr85 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

The real outrage in all of this was that Jackie Coakley herself was never punished or that Teresa Sullivan, the president of UVA,who believed her ridiculous story wasn't fired.

[–]Halafax 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Jackie is judgement proof, the sort if lawyers that are willing to do cases like this want money. She doesn't have anything worth taking, so she's safe.
