Men being afraid of false accusations is "toxic masculinity"? What? Is this article serious?

[–][deleted] 14 points15 points16 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Seriously, what the hell? It’s unreasonable to be afraid of being falsely accused?

It’s risk aversion, plain and simple. The article says that avoidance is evidence men just give into their urges. It’s more men know they could do everything right, and still be stabbed in the back at any time and have their career destroyed.

The ability to accuse and condemn the mentor is always looming. Any rational man is not going to put his career on the line to mentor a young woman.

"it would be inappropriate for anyone to purposely avoid a colleague out of fear of a false accusation of impropriety. Justifying this choice is the essence of a mindset that limits the potential for mentorship across gender identities. "

Why...why is it inappropriate?

inquiring minds demand to know.

I have a situation like that at work. The woman in question accused her last supervisor of sexual harassment because they did not get along well on a personal level. Now management wants to put her with me. Gee, thanks.

[–]fengpi 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

Why...why is it inappropriate?

Because any male-female interaction must result in free benefits for women. Withholding beneficial interactions must be punished, ditto for failures to provide enough beneficial interactions in fact. Any other kind of interaction ought to be criminal.

Oh, and continue to act normal no matter how many threats of punishment are held over your head! The innocent have nothing to fear, unless some paranoid chick gets offended by an innocent remark. Like that could ever happen, ha ha ha. Pay no attention to the iron fist being shaken at you. Act like you don't know it's there.

ACT NORMAL, GOD DAMMIT!!

When Men Shy Away from Mentoring Women

It has severe implications for women's advancement. By Richard J. Reddick Ed.D.

I’ve been conducting research on mentoring for over a decade, and much of my work looks at cross-gender mentoring, mainly because the numbers of women in leadership roles is so low. In many cases, the only mentorship available to junior women is from men. That’s why the thought of men shying away from mentoring women is so troubling, because it has severe implications for the advancement of women in organizations. If some men are withdrawing from mentoring, this will impact the ability of women to advance in leadership. And it is particularly true for women of color, who often experience double marginalization in organizations that are male-dominated and predominantly white.

This is a very feminist piece.

Gender equity is a goal that everyone in an organization should embrace.

I think it would be best to stop discriminating against men and violating their civil rights, but that's been a heretical idea for a long time.

"Grrl pwr! Fish and bicycles! Sisters doin' it for themselves! Stop mansplaining! St00pid mehnz are good for nothing! Whoot!"

"Okay ladies, suit yourselves. Buh bye."

"N-no! Wait wait! But but vital mentoring?! We need that! But but endorsement!? We need that too! But but networking?! We also need that! Hey! Why aren't you inviting us to tag-along for drinks with your buddies!?! We can't succeed without that stuff! Heeeelp! We want your Stupid Boy's Club to give us a hand! Come back, you stupid harassers! It's sexist to not share your stuff with us!"

I've never seen a source for the oft-quoted "200 men removed from their positions because of #MeToo." You'd think that would be easy to substantiate given how many times you hear about it.

[–]ky_biker 5 points6 points7 points 7 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

it's possible but why take the chance?

[–]agree-with-you 2 points3 points4 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I agree, this does seem possible.

[–]fengpi 3 points4 points5 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Isn't a male mentor just a positive spin on "mansplainer" though?

I mean, men aren't supposed to mansplain stuff, it's oppressive. Unless you refuse to do so, now you're oppressing women by not mentoring them.

Let's just cut to the chase and criminalize any man for displeasing any woman, whether the displeasure is by commission or by omission. And that includes failure to applaud loud enough when a woman fucks the boss for promotions and raises.

[–]CaptSnap 2 points3 points4 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

All things being approx equal of two choices, if one choice carries more risk it will be avoided.

Its not rocket science.

[–]Gimpy1405 2 points3 points4 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The author of the article is either naive or ignoring sources of risk. Not a particularly illuminating article if the goal is to unpack the reasons of why potential mentors are staying away from female "mentees". It looks like, however, a good example of a well meaning author who wants an outcome badly enough to not see pertinent elements.

[–]mgtowolf 2 points3 points4 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It's risk VS reward. You take on more risk, without getting more of a reward by mentoring a woman as a man. Until you change that dynamic, men that can reason will not act any different.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Rational decision = "shy away"

[–]Greg_W_Allan 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I've been in leadership roles most of my life. If you want mentoring don't demand it as of right. That proves you unworthy in my mind.

[–]valenin 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

That’s what I don’t get. As far as I can tell people operate on a new definition of ‘mentoring’ now because management assigning you a protégée is an insane idea, and because (as you say) demanding someone mentor you is the approach of a child.

[–]PeruvianRug 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

When social progressives decided to go Rambo on white men, like me, was when I decided to cease all support for their social movement.

How the fuck can you expect me to give buy-in to your notion of "equality" when blatant racism and sexism against me are not only tolerated, but printed in major publications to much fanfare?

[–]JackReaper333 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I'd imagine that the feminist idea of "correct" mentoring would go a little something like this...

  • A woman is chosen for mentoring by a senior male employee.

  • No matter how complicated the position is or what the job actually is, the woman tags along for no more than one week.

  • The senior male employee writes a glowing letter of praise to his superiors and states that the woman is the absolute best employee that has ever existed and not only is she extremely qualified but is, in fact, more qualified than he is and she should immediately begin to be paid more than he is getting paid.

  • The senior male employee immediately begins to treat the female as his senior and defers to her in all matters.

When someone has the power to ruin your entire life- to literally rob you of your ability to provide yourself with food, clothes, and shelter- over a misunderstanding or an off- hand comment they lands wrong, your gonna stay away from that person. Women have a power problem, not an oppression problem.

[–]azazelcrowley 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It's not merely a sex thing. In general there's no point taking a chance on forming any kind of deeper relationship, professional or otherwise, with a woman unless they indicate at least an ambivalence toward the feminist movement. Even the most innocuous comment can set them off and lead to them deciding to have a vendetta against you, including recognizing misandry is a thing, and because they are a hate cult, they'll lie about you in general. It doesn't have to be a rape thing to ruin your career, she can make up any kind of shit about how you're an evil meany sexist, and to her deranged mind, because you said something like "Misandry is real", she's merely stretching the truth, not lying.

[–]Jackson2615 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

No man would willingly mentor a woman in todays workplaces, After soaking up all your knowledge and advice etc , she would then turn around and accuse you of sexual harassment and take your job.
