Easy to misread if you're a feminist I guess. The film does not, I think, try to point to any one gender as the cause of Arthur's suffering. The main enemy seems to be general callousness and lack of empathy, especially from rich to poor. Thomas Wayne isn't an asshole because he's a man, it's because he belittles poor people. It's bad when he punches Arthur, but also come on, Arthur went up to his house and touched his kid's face and was very threatening. You might say the rich kids harassing the women was misogyny, but they also attacked Arthur, it seems they were just looking for easy targets. As for the gang of kids, in poor communities boys form gangs because of rejection from those around them, while women in the same situation are protected and supported, and violence is how some young boys try to find power because they have none otherwise. It's bad but it's a common result of poverty and disenfranchisement. His female therapist was shown to be completely uncaring about his mental health, just there for a paycheck. And his mother, whild vague on whether she was personally violent, clearly had no issue exposing him to a string of abusive men.

It's a film that doesn't excuse people from being abusers based on sex. It's critiquing a widevariety of forms of abuse.

His female therapist was shown to be completely uncaring about his mental health, just there for a paycheck.

While the therapy scenes did give a strong just-going-through-the-motions vibe, I read that more as her (and him) being resigned to the fact that there was nothing else the system they were trapped in would do to help him, regardless of whether she cared or not.

My interpretation was his social worker would have helped him if she could but resources were too limited.

Well said

Root of his psychological issue was his chronic BPD suffering mother.

I say this a lot:

When something good happens its 'society' that did it.

When something bad happens, its the men of society who did it. Women are blameless.

Gender studies logic: Think any characteristics which is associated with men, add toxic word to it, start advertising.

Copy meinkampf, replace jews with men. Profit.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Someone actually did that to prove a point

[–]ancientalien9991 point 6 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Yea scary stuff.

Gender studies logic: well obviously xyz problem is caused by Patriarchy, male privilege, and toxic masculinity. Women are the victims.

All that remains is to determine what xyz problem is.

If you're a feminist, what isn't caused by toxic masculinity?

Yeah all the women in his life were ready to be super welcoming, nurturing, and understanding, unlike the men, right?

[–]huxepenner 2 points3 points4 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

"Toxic masculinity" is the latest feminist obsession now for feminists to blame on anything they dislike.

I've read the article and it can be basically summarised in one sentence- "Men are bad, it's bad to be male".

when his mother let her boyfriend's abuse her son definitely toxic masculinity

[–]LittleJimmyUrine 1 point2 points3 points 6 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Well yeah. It's the toxic masculinity that caused him to abuse the boy and internalized misogyny perpetrated by the patriarchy that forced her to let him abuse her son. It's men's fault allllllll the way down.

is it weird to think arthur's mother got what she deserved

[–]Kierran169 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Not necessarily. She was fucked up in the head

Religious group claims all world's problems caused by their version of sin/Satan/lack of prayer.

[–]Foreverfasting 3 points4 points5 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

His problems were caused by poverty and a head injury.

If we want to dig really deep, greed by wealthy men has caused poverty, and it was his mother's ex bf who gave him the head injury.

Since men built almost all the institutions of the world and even more of the physical infrastructure, it's easy to blame them for everything.
