When my drama teacher opened up about the son of his close friend committing suicide, my classmate immediately blamed it on "toxic masculinity" to the support of all the girls in the class. I spoke up and said it was insensitive. This was our conversation that afternoon.

Toxic masculinity is:

  • Heroic self-sacrifice

Their conversation always seems to leave out the "toxic masculinity" that benefits others at the expense of men.

[–]Fathernomore 21 points22 points23 points 6 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

  1. Domestic violence is not primarily toward women. 48.8% of men have been victims of emotional abuse versus 48m4% of women. You read that right, more men are emotionally abused than are women. While it is true that women are more likely to be physically abused than men are, domestic abuse is both physical and emotional.

  2. By blaming masculinity for his death, she is victim blaming. Would she be so quick to blame a woman for getting raped? Of course not. He was mentally I'll, and because WOMEN mock guys for showing any weakness, he did not seek health. If anything, his death was brought about by toxic femininity.

[–]AEHIILRS9 points 6 years ago [recovered] (2 children) | Copy Link

You read that right, more men are emotionally abused than are women.

The majority of rape victims are men, not too surprising that the majority of abuse victims would be men, too.

While it is true that women are more likely to be physically abused than men

I'd be unsurprised if it turns out that's not true, either, but simply that physical abuse against women occurs mainly in reciprocally abusive relationships and the injuries of male victims are simply unrecognized as being the result of abuse (and/or the injuries of female abusers being unrecognized as the result of self-defense).

[–]Fathernomore 3 points4 points5 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

While I would not be surprised by that, I am talking strictly from statistical reporting. I would expect male injuries from physical abuse are under reported due to feminine toxicity which ridicules males for being abused, something they would NEVER do to a female victim of physical abuse.

his death was brought about by toxic femininity.

Mental health counseling is useless for men because they won't let men talk about the toxic femininity they experience in their lives.

• Heroic self-sacrifice

I wouldn’t call that toxic masculinity. The word toxic suggests undesirable behaviours.

I get your point though we should talk more about what ‘good looks like’ then what’s its not.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 6 years ago* (3 children) | Copy Link

I think the point is that everything that's 'toxic' about toxic masculinity is an extreme version of a characteristic that's extremely helpful and productive when done in moderation. You can't get rid of toxic masculinity without also removing a goodly proportion of the positive characteristics.

Confidence becomes bravado.

Decisiveness becomes impulsive risk taking.

Independence and self-reliance become insularity.

Stocism becomes needless self sacrifice.

[–]mherm79 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Understand your point but I’d like to thing we are better than that and can have the good without the bad

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Then you really don't understand anything about population statistics and the curves that humanity falls on, religously.

[–]mherm79 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yeah I do not get actually and if we aspired to and worked towards improving ourselves them percentage of those exhibiting poor social behaviour would be much reduced

[–]dontpet 16 points17 points18 points 6 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

That condescending ending left me feeling dirty.

[–]ExxiIon 13 points14 points15 points 6 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

This is a classmate of mine. I knew that if I kept the conversation going longer she would've put me on her misogynist list and probably would've turned a bunch of people against me.

[–]dontpet 15 points16 points17 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Good on you for challenging her. It was appalling behavior.

I suggest you pop her on your misandrist list.

[–]ExxiIon 7 points8 points9 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I just put her under "sexist"

[–]x6x6x61982 15 points16 points17 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

toxic masculinity is "lad culture" and "locker room talks"

How about you piss the fuck off, me and my lads will talk behind the closed locker room doors whatever the fuck we want. What we talk in private is none of your damn business smfh.

[–]PMmepicsofyourtits 4 points5 points6 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Toxic femininity is gossip?

[–]iainmf 8 points9 points10 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Well, you tried to talk about your feelings but you got shut down.

Better not talk about your feelings next time.

--

But seriously, one thing you can do when talking about toxic masculinity is talk about your feelings on the matter, not what you think. When I have talked about how I find the term toxic masculinity hurtful and asked people not to use it, a few times the people complaining about the problem of toxic masculinity have essentially told me to 'man up and stop being a pussy', but not in those words. If they do that it pretty clear that they aren't interested in getting men to express themselves more.

[–]ExxiIon 4 points5 points6 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Well that's certainly worth a try. I want her to either wake up a little bit, or get told off for being sexist. "I guess you u don't feel the need to understand it as a male". If that's not gender stereotyping than you can throw me off a building and call me a seagull, because I don't want to identify as a guy anymore.

[–]v573v 5 points6 points7 points 6 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

And yet every heterosexual girl in that class has often fantasized about:

  • Being perceived as sexy by men.
  • A man’s ability to use violence in her defence.
  • Bad boys
  • Stoicism
  • Non-effeminate men.

[–]you_wanka 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Are you really saying it's good to treat women as sex objects, for men to suppress their emotions and to call men gay if they don't confirm to traditional concepts of masculinity?

[–]v573v 1 point2 points3 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Aren’t the boys the ones being objectified under the terms I’ve described above? Or is it understood by you that sexual attraction isn’t objectification when it’s a girl’s fantasy or her describing her sexual attraction or sexual fantasy to and of boys; it’s only the boys describing their sexual attraction to girls that makes it objectification? Let me make it clear for you: sexual attraction is not objectification by either gender.

There is not one human on this planet who can suppress or control their emotion responses to a stimuli - no matter how hard they try to prevent it the emotion will happen none the less. Next time you are in the presence of these magical beings who can suppress their emotions ask them how they do it because any military would love to know how they can suppress fear or anxiety in their soldiers. Psychologists would love to know your super human’s incantation that prevents them from experiencing unwanted emotions.

I’m saying those girls are hypocrites for complaining about many of the very things that attract them to boys. I’m saying that boys exploit the behaviour of strangers who don’t conform to masculinity to boost their image in front of girls who are highly receptive to it.

I’m saying that it’s utterly normal for boys to exhibit what you deem toxic masculinity and normal for heterosexual girls to respond favourably to it.

Men aren’t in trouble because they lack emotions they are in trouble because they suffer emotional isolation and the solution to that isolation is perceived as harmful to women’s equality.

Why are you even texting this person? You're putting yourself at unnecessary risk, repeatedly.

[–]ExxiIon 8 points9 points10 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

This conversation was the most dangerous conversation I've had with a feminist radicalist. I shut it down when I realised that she was certainly going to use this conversation against me. Luckily, I've got the one thing she doesn't - common sense. I'm not stupid, I wouldn't dare piss off a feminist because I know what they can do to a man's reputation.

[–]Undidiridium_ 2 points3 points4 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It's insane what they are willing to do just to ruin someone. As a female, I had them cyber harrash me for months. Constant messages of "go kill yourself" "you're worthless" etc. Would comment on my pictures calling me ugly and fat. These were people online who I had one conversation with. I can't imagine how much worse it probably is for you guys.

I'm a cosplayer so I go to cons and hang out with all sorts of people and lately I've been told by a lot of my male con friends that they feel uncomfortable being anywhere alone with me. (not specifically with me but any female in a sucleded area/room) and I completely understand, but shit it sucks for you guys to have to deal with that BS.

Has anyone else noticed that 'toxic masculunity" became a belief for the left just when their eugenuics and Jewish blood libel became unacceptable?

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points7 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

feminazi blaming men

[–]Lion_amongst_gods 2 points3 points4 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

If no uterus, no opinion... Why do women get to define "toxic masculinity"?

[–]SirYouAreIncorrect 1 point2 points3 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Why did you claim that most Domestic Violence is against women, this is 100% false

[–]DougDante 1 point2 points3 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Try not to engage with this person. They do not display compassion towards you, only malice.

[–]RoryTate 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Good job in standing up for yourself in class, and later on in the private conversation. Also, excellent recognition of the fruitlessness and danger of that disagreement. That was a very mature reaction. She was not going to be convinced otherwise (you can't logically argue a person out of a position they didn't rationally argue themselves into in the first place), and there was no one else present to be swayed by your stronger and more reasonable statements.

Ideologues like her may appear to have support, but you should know it's likely that many of the people nodding along are only doing so out of fear and peer pressure. They don't truly believe the nonsense that she spouts. So don't get too frustrated by the seeming resistance to the truth. They have no idea what being a man is about, yet they are so ignorant that they think they know better than you what it's like. The condescending attitude of "You don't understand gender studies" is predictable and truly demonstrates their insensitivity and ignorance. Don't be easily swayed by the argument from authority fallacy, and just judge it with your own eyes and ears. If you do you might come to the same conclusion as many rational people when it comes to the subject of gender studies: it's "women only" studies in practice (its original name was laughingly "women's studies" after all), it sees anything male as negative (smash the patriarchy) or at best neutral and never positive, and it is entirely an academic sham and worthless as a field of study.

You will always know better than women what it means to be a man.

[–]mherm79 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I’ve had male college’s and family friends commit suicide and I would describe them as gentlemen and could not associate any of the topic ‘is’ list with them.

Good on you for standing up - we need voices like you to speak up and call out bad behaviour. The causes behind male suicide needs much more attention as it’s truly alarming that us men are most at threat from ourselves.

Toxic masculinity is: - telling boys that are crying to ‘stop being a girl’ - telling a bloke who is sad/ depressed to ‘man up’ - laughing at ‘dad bodes’ - assuming all dads are incompetent careers - which leads to lower rates of fathers winning custody over mothers - assuming all men are violent / aggressors and all women are innocent victims

[–]MRA-automatron-2kb 1 point2 points3 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Telling boys and men that women didn't sexually abuse them when they were boys because only men do this.
