Definitely agree on chores up front. My husband and I both worked FT when we moved in together. We had the fastest chore talk ever. 😂

He said: I don’t mind mowing the lawn and doing dishes, but I hate cleaning toilets. I said: I know you also hate laundry and I have no problem with laundry and cooking, but I also don’t want to clean toilets. He said: Ok. Sounds like we are hiring someone to come clean our bathrooms. And we did.

You will learn his quirks and annoying habits during this time. He will learn yours. Try to be mindful about your reactions to each other. Example: Don’t roll your eyes when he has to go check that the doors are locked for the 3rd time. Be appreciative that he is concerned for your safety.

I would advise keeping your money and bills separate. If you're not engaged or married, you don't want to put yourself in a situation where you feel like you're only together because it's too hard to leave. It's not romantic, but if you're not married, don't live like it. It's also just good to leave some differences between living together and married, so it'll feel like something has actually changed if and when you do marry.

It’s boring but agree everything beforehand with a roommate when it comes to chores and shared consumables. Also agree on rules for common area.

Don’t make big purchases together since you’re not engaged. If you break up who gets the couch or tv or air fryer. It’s not worth the hassle but it’s also nice to save that for when you’re married.

Decide early who is primarily in charge of what for day to do stuff. Who pays which bills. Who cooks dinner. Who grocery shops. Who does laundry. Who does car maintenance. Who cleans the toilets. Who takes out the trash. There should be a “primary” person for each and every household task and you help each other as needed.

My fiancée and I moved in together for a year before we got engaged a couple of weeks ago. For us it was the right thing to do to see any fundamental lifestyle compatibilities before we decided to get married.

One of the first few things we did was decide on our finances. We opened a joint account and calculated our contributions based on our salaries. This would pay our mortgage, bills, dates, groceries, pets and any other shared expenses.

Then we decided on our household chores. We both work very demanding jobs with long hours so we hired a cleaner once weekly to cover all the main cleaning including bathrooms. We have a scheduled grocery delivery on Sundays and I’ll bulk cook to last us midweek when we’re both busiest. I manage our laundry while he takes out the bins.

He manages our finances including our investments because it’s what he enjoys and I get updates on it on a weekly basis.

The main things that often crop up with couples are finances and chores. Then there’s the issue of ‘spending too much time with each other’ which in its own way can be a problem. So we both manage that by blocking off time for ourselves and set date nights on the weekends to plan something nice.

Nobody is perfect, we all have bad habits but we both felt it was important to know if these little habits would become deal breakers or something we can compromise.

It also puts you in a position to learn how to communicate with each other effectively without any additional pressure of marriage. You see them at their most vulnerable in their quietest moments at home, and they see yours too.
