I'm not an American and I don't know how effective this petition is going to be but male genital mutilation should be banned.

WHEREAS routine infant circumcision (RIC, or male genital mutilation - MGM) is a medically unnecessary surgery that is performed without the victim's consent, and WHEREAS not a single national medical organization on Earth recommends routine infant circumcision, and WHEREAS RIC is a violation of the basic human right of bodily integrity, and WHEREAS boys deserve the same legal protection against genital mutilation or alteration that is now afforded girls in the United States, we call upon Congress to enact a law banning circumcision when not medically indicated on any male without his consent and before he has reached the age of 18.

Can parents make religious claims on behalf of their infant children?

In the United States, yes.

I'm no legal expert but I doubt religious aspects will trump fundamental rights of bodily integrity.

Look into the age of responsibility. It differs by culture, and law, but is generally between eight and twelve.

One well known example for young men starts with the subject claiming, "Today, I am a man.".

Anything under that age the child is generally assumed not to have bodily integrity, their parents make all those choices.

Don't misunderstand me. I am against circumcision. But I think the fight needs to be cultural, not legal. Working to get parents to voluntarily reject the procedure will be more effective that forcing them to reject it.

Circumcision is a religious aspect of many Abrahamic religions, and our culture is largely Judeo-Christian, so many have strong feelings about it.

The First Amendment protects people from the government's interference with their own, individual religious choices, including the choice to get ritually circumcised. Groups doing rituals together are only protected from government interference when each individual member consents to their role in the ritual. It doesn't protect a parent or guardian or group when any of those parties acts to violate the bodily autonomy rights of others.

It's a crime to slice and rip off the foreskin of a grown man without his consent. It's a crime to do so to a child that's not your own, with or without their consent, as a child's verbal consent for elective procedures isn't considered legally or ethically valid, because they're usually too young to understand what they're sacrificing.

Don't forget that individual U.S. states have laws that ban any extent of ritual or cosmetic cutting or piercing of girls' genitals, so those states would be violating the Equal Protection clause of the Fourteenth Amendment to the US Constitution any time they choose to not protect boys in the same way.

Try telling that to the people who are campaigning to get FGM banned in countries that still allow it. I suspect you would not get a favorable response. Inb4 "BUT BUT BUT FGM IS ACKSHUALLY WORSE AND THAT MEANS MGM IS ACKSHUALLY OKAY BECAUSE REASONS CHECKM8 INCEL": One bad thing being [hypothetically] less bad than another bad thing does not mean that the [hypothetically] less bad thing is actually not bad. Cutting off someone's toe would not be as bad as cutting off their foot, but everyone can agree that both are bad.

The same government that will rule for "Bodily Integrity over Religion/Values" is the same one that will say "And on that note, the social worker has decided your 8-year child has Gender Dysphoria; the medically and psychologically necessary emergency surgery is scheduled for next Monday.

Bullshit. A government that actually is for bodily integrity won't allow ANY child mutilation to happen. You do realize that the precedent set by MGM being legal makes it easier to push transgenderism on children, right? If MGM was outlawed, it would be harder for them to do that.

If your religion or culture requires anyone to be mutilated at any time for any reason, then your religion or culture is barbaric, backwards, and can fuck right off back to the Stone Age where it belongs. You can call me a bigot if I wish. I don't care. Barbaric, backwards Stone Age religions and cultures that mutilate people, especially children, deserve nothing but scorn and contempt.
