There are different types of D&R (divorce and recovery) coaches; some that specialize in custody disputes, others that try to keep costs down, some that work only with women, while others with men. My job has 2 fronts; to help men avoid an expensive long drawn out divorce, while increasing their quality of life as a single dad, and newly single man. I was just featured in the New York Times for this exact work because more men are starting to realize how little support men really get during this process. If you’re about to go through it, having someone who’s done this hundreds of times in your corner changes everything. Great question!

I am a divorce coach. And I would strongly suggest hiring an attorney and a coach. We often save our client’s 50% off attorneys fees leaving them with two supportive professionals for less than the cost of an attorney if your proceedings drag on.

Yes I am one. I recently switched from being a divorce attorney to a coach as I have seen the gaps in the system and after healing from one myself know the nuances and want to help other people do this in more efficient way in which they feel empowered and gain clarity.

As both a divorce lawyer and certified divorce coach, I think the roles are very different and you’ll find a lot of divorce coaches giving legal advice (which isn’t legal or reliable). I’d think of a divorce coach as a friend who knows a lot about divorce, practically, emotionally and the court process, who is there to help you avoid pitfalls and get through it as unscathed as possible. Most of us only go through it once, so it’s good to have someone help Light your path.

Hi, I went through an extraordinarily litigious divorce that took 5 years and 6 figures to complete. I can tell you from first-hand experience lawyers did not tell me everything I needed to know, and this is the crux of the matter. Lawyers are not educators and hardly take the time to explain what's coming your way properly. And what your true alternatives are.

The most important thing that needs to happen in a divorce is a personality assessment to understand what is the most likely path to resolution in a divorce. And guess what never happens in a divorce?

If you are divorcing a narcissist - good luck; there are very few resources to help you out there.

So I became a certified divorce coach to help people understand what's coming and prepare prepare prepare, and make decisions. I have spoken to many people who describe a completely abusive, toxic relationship, only to end by saying... that I still love my spouse. That's right, people do lose all sense of healthy vs toxic and lose their inner compass, and become unable to make even the most simple decisions.

A coach who has been there and has done is a great resource.

We have a divorce coach as part of our collaborative team

I have found her to be useless in helping to resolve the single greatest thing unresolved in our divorce that caused so many problems with our marriage, which is my soon to be ex prioritizing every want of our kids versus any need of our marriage

Wife coach and I all agree that 15 yr old daughter should attend counseling with me to reset our relationship

15 yo doesn’t want to do it. Coach and wife say oh well

I'm an attorney (used to do only divorce) and completed a certified divorce coaching program (https://certifieddivorcecoach.com/) during covid.

I don't think a divorce coach should be considered a replacement for an attorney or a therapist but there seems to be a bunch of overlap.

I'd be curious to know more about how your friend achieved that outcome. Sounds fishy and like some unauthorized practice of law by the divorce coach. But an outcome is an outcome - no denying that.

Divorce coaches are cheaper than therapists and lawyers and serve to supplement both of those roles and also provide a broader view, I daresay holistic but not in the woowoo way.

Divorce coaches are good at:

Explaining the divorce process, personal, emotional, legal, practical, so you can get a better overall feeling for it, rather getting bits and pieces from all over the place.
Helping you figure out your own solutions to what you want (in terms of settlement and broader life after divorce) and how to go about trying to achieve it. Lawyers try to solve their clients' problems and in doing so, push bad or unwanted settlements on their clients sometimes. EDIT: plus you can spend more time with the divorce coach to explore things without worrying about always being on the clock.
Encourage, monitor and provide accountability in the main aspects of your life and serve as a sounding board.

When I think about the role of the coach and the lawyer, it's about gaining some cost efficiency in dealing with the lawyer. For example, one thing I'll do is if a coaching client wants to email something to their lawyer, I'll review it and make sure it's pointed and concise, so the lawyer knows what they really need to answer and spend maybe 0.5 hours on it rather than 0.3 to draft a clarifying email, 0.6 on a phone call, and another 0.8 on drafting a reply - or a total of 1.7.

Another thing coaches can do is more of the paralegal type work of helping to gather documents or take the first blush at filling out financial statements and other paperwork.

It's kind of like having someone to walk with you who has a clue what they're doing and what you're going through and can also keep your divorce from bleeding out over your family, friends, co-workers, social media and the greater community.

Those are my thoughts on it. Everyone can use a divorce coach but not everyone needs one.

Boils down to see this as a once in a lifetime opportunity to redesign your life and make it awesome. Get buff, get a hobby, improve your finances, and all this shit goes away.

I would NEVER EVER recommend using anyone other than an Attorney in a divorce. It's like asking a guy off the street to do open heart surgery.

All that is at stake is your family, your assets, your future... sure go ask someone named "Coach" to sort it all out.

I have not, but my own thoughts are you're putting yourself at risk.

When we started the process it was supposed to be all amicable and shit, and things got worse by the day. We got into mediation. She made a stupid high offer, we made a stupid low offer, and they walked out of the mediation. Next, she successfully delayed the trial and now, a year into an ongoing nightmare of things I never imagined possible, I'm going to court.

Maybe everything will go smoothly. Betting on that is a worse bet than betting on the marriage working in the first place.
