Couldn't get through it to the sexist parts.

After the article talks about how all millennials are afraid of any commitment, and how avoiding parenthood is like "dodging a draft" I lost all interest.

If you don't want to be a mom, then don't. If you want to be a mom then go ahead. I don't care either way.

But when you start pretending that this particular time in history is the hardest time ever to be a mom is incredibly blind to history.

You had people becoming moms during the Great Depression, Spanish Flu, World Wars, etc. Our current recessions, viruses, and wars are nowhere near as bad and technology has made life super fun and convenient. And medical technology has made giving birth the safest it has ever been.

You could argue that being a mom is the easiest it has ever been in history if you are living in a Western nation.

Yeah, losing your house and decades of earnings in divorce and child custody bullshit is nothing.

No fucking wonder parenting is dreaded in the state of the world.

Boomers did this, by the way, despite whatever their intents were, by modeling for their kids that parenthood and especially motherhood was some kind of tragic, tortuous thing foisted on them. The kids end up feeling at some level guilty for being born and determined to learn from their parents' mistake(s), and associating their own trauma with this mistake.

I don't think a lot of the people raging about fertility rates realize how many upbringings were like this and how deeply it penetrates. There aren't enough psychology PhDs in the world to tackle the scale of it.

Silver lining is that the people having kids today do so very deliberately, extremely unlikely to repeat this pattern. So in a sense, the Millennial response worked although overzealous and fundamentally flawed.

Yeah it has some pretty sexist parts, but it also acknowledges that men are treated as secondary parents and the impact that has on lgbtq men who have kids.

It talks heavily about how horrible motherhood sounds, then starts talking about how it doesn’t sound nearly as bad if you actually ask mothers and not mass media.

The article isn’t nearly as bad as y’all think it is

Perhaps the most telling thing about this article is the assumption that having children or not is a decision lying entirely with women. The author completely ignores men as having input or why fewer men are choosing to marry.

I can't find anything particularly sexist - it talks about pregnancy affecting women more, which is obvious because it has health risks and aftermath. It talks about inequality with childcare and household burden, which is statistically a struggle for mothers.

It doesn't focus on men or empathise with fathers much, doesn't shout out men's issues in parenthood, and doesn't pay a shout out to the men who break those traditions and have egalitarian relationships and coparenthoods. That might be what you're sensing. "Men have less to lose" could be referring to the act of parenting and pregnancy, but doesn't talk about custody imbalances and male breadwinners.

But mainly, she's just talking about why young women and young millennials in general are afraid of parenthood, through a female perspective. Nothing really sexist as far as I can see.
