How do you feel about the concept of "respect women," which is a narrative constantly hammered into society and especially directed at men and boys? I've ranted about this before but I strongly feel respect is something both women and men alike need to earn and not automatically granted due to gender. Respect is earned by being a kind, decent person who does things that merit respect. To make respect gender-based cheapens and de-values it. Not all women are good and respectable people, just as men. Hearing that women should always be regarded and treated with respect is a major personal trigger for me with bad memories it brings back of childhood abuse and bullying I suffered from female students and staff members in schools. When I hear about "respect women," well I certainly have less than zero respect for my extremely abusive third grade teacher who regularly beat and belittled me in front of the class and even encouraged bullying. Or a nanny I had who regularly slapped me, and also a female staff member at a nursery that I can still remember stepping on me with her high heels, for no reason. Yet I should still have respect for these women because of their gender, never mind that they abused me terribly and I still bear trauma from this? I think not.

Male or female, respect is earned, and to expect and demand it purely for gender? Automatic disqualification.
