What's the difference between a courtesy smile and a romantic interest smile?

Has less to do with smiles and more to do with eye contact but I follow a three second rule. If they hold eye contact for three seconds they are digging you, no questions asked

People subconsciously sense legitimate smiles/laughs and are inclined to smile/laugh along. So when you're actually laughing at something hilarious in your head and you smile at someone, they'll smile back. You're not smiling 'at them' you're just smiling and there's nothing creepy about someone enjoying their life

Okay so walking around grinning like an idiot could be creepy. But you get the idea

it depends. I get smiles and I am far from good looking, some people just like to smile... key here is how long is the gaze? if it is just a quick look smile then move on then its probably courtesy, if it holds and lingers a bit then you got something there.

I'm not an expert, but I've noticed and read about the difference between legitimate smiles and forced smiles have a lot to do with the individual's eyes. In a real smile, people will smile with their eyes so to speak. They squint a bit, their pupils dilate, their overall facial expression is relaxed and not tense. Of course when you're far away or new at reading faces this is hard to do, but follow your gut. Use context clues, read body language and the environment.

Alternatively, don't worry if its an IOI or not and just go for it and assume it is.

Yes, this is an "indicator of interest". But the general consensus would be that one IOI is not enough to be sure; 3 probably seals the deal.

But who cares? If someone smiles at you does it matter why?

It's all in the eyes. Make direct eye contact, then hold it for a few seconds.

I tend to use a regular double-sided smile for being friendly and a sly half smile to show romantic interest. I think this is more on a person to person basis though, do what fits your face. Don't be afraid to practice in front of a mirror.

If they are bold they will look at you intensely for more than a couple seconds. Easy IOI. They may even give you a complete up and down look.

If they are shy they will meet eye contact, look away, wait 2 seconds and look back at you. If you catch them doing this they, find you at least somewhat attractive. They may also look at you, smile, and look away followed by fidgeting with their outfit or hair - It is very had to not want to fidget when you see someone you're attracted to unexpectedly.

If they are somewhere in the middle, they will probably look at you for a second longer than usual. Additionally they will keep their eyes on you while turning away causing 3 seconds of eye contact but with a guard. Additionally they may fidget.

It's all about their eyes if you ask me. People's mouths almost always look the same when smiling, but their eyes give away the type of smile.
