If it was me I would be kinda peeved if I was on a cell phone or in an obvious rush. When the kids are with me, go for it, just be appropriate. I suppose if it were a cell phone situation you could always follow for a block or so ... and if it goes longer than that give up, because at that point it just gets creepy.

1) Tell her (loudly) to hang up, so you can hit on her, and that her friend will be fine if you call her back. Do it in an exaggerated but funny way. If she objects, tell her to ask her friend what she thinks. Turn her friend into your cheerleader. If you're lucky, her friend will tell her to hear you out. If you're unlucky, it's her boyfriend, in which case you just apologize.

2) Same as in any other case. If she's truly in a rush, she'll just keep going. If she stops, she isn't really in a rush. Don't make the decision for her about whether or not she's in a rush. Just make it sound really important for you to talk to her, since if she's somewhat in a rush you need to hook quickly for her to decide to be late for whatever she's running for.

3) Situational, and quickly establish if the kids are hers, and if so what her situation is, and whether it's something you want to deal with. Try to make the kids your cheerleaders if she's not in a relationship, just be careful not to make it creepy. If she sees you interact with the kids in a normal, non-creepy way and the kids like you, you've scored major points.

It's really really hard to approach a random woman on the street, and basically any of these three things disqualify a pick-up attempt. The kids are the least of your problems (if she's on the phone, it's just plain rude, and if she's really in a rush, she'll probably be more irritated than anything else).

If she has kids, she may be open to an approach, but not only is there a high probability she's already involved with someone, but her maternal protectiveness will kick in, and she will not be in a sexual frame of mind.

I'd just steer clear.

(To respond to the "low-hanging fruit" analogy -- this thread is somewhat like asking how to get the apples that have fallen into a raging river. It's possible to fish them out... but why bother?)

I would not approach them in any of these scenarios because your chance of success are slim and you would probably get yourself a slap in the face. In fact, I would only attempt this dangerous maneuver if I had my dog with me because if the woman gets angry I could blame my dog by saying something like: "It wasn't my fault my dog ran up to you because you looked like my girlfriend." Then I would ask her why she thought a guy who already has a girlfriend would try to pick her up. As she ponders the question you should start walking away because she would eventually figure out what you just did. You should also start walking your dog in different route for a couple of weeks just to be safe.

Also, women with children are red flags and I would purposely walk across the street to avoid them.

1) Wouldn't. 2) Wouldn't. 3) Wouldn't. But I do salute your efforts. Those scenarios will basically just make on-lookers think to themselves "That poor bastard." Whereas, if she wasn't doing any of those, onlookers would think to themselves "That guy's got balls, good work."

I care what onlookers think.

You're getting a surprising amount of hostility on this one. I guess you've touched a sensitive spot for folks. Even the abstract thought of doing an approach in these circumstances is crashing people out of their comfort zones. That's impressive. :)

Good for you. I still have a hard time with less than ideal circumstance approaches, but I'm working on it. It does take balls to approach when the circumstances aren't perfect.

I'm looking forward to trying a phone approach next time I see a girl I like the looks of on the phone. I like rubygeek's suggestion a lot. Being cocky and funny seems the best choice...just say, "Hey, tell them you'll call them back." and gesture at the phone. If she says, "No.", you might even get away with, "Do you want me to tell them? OK, give me the phone." But, I'm not sure I have the balls to pull that one just yet.

I have often talked to girls who are intensely texting. And I'll call them out for it, or just say something like, in a rapid-fire no time for an answer way, "Who are you texting so intently that you're ignoring the rest of the world? Why aren't they here yet? Are they running late? What's their excuse?" Usually, they'll say something like, "My friend. She's at home/work, blah blah." And, I'll say something like, "Tell them I said they should come. Do it. Say, 'intjpua said you should come'. I don't see you typing. Do it."

There's an apple tree, with lots of delicious apples. The tree, being a tree, has fruit all over its branches. Some are at the very top, some you can reach just by standing. This thread is about ignoring the low-hanging fruit, and trying to get the ones at the top that take a lot of effort, and a decent amount of luck.
